Hey all, I know I don't post as much as I once did but did want to let everyone know that my daughter, Brianna, signed to play softball in college. She had several options from D-I and D-II schools but decided to stay close to home. The program she picked, UMSL, (D-II) has a new coach who really stresses the commitment to education above softball and so, has very organized "study tables" that he sits in on every day. That team, as compared to all of the others, is also so close knit. We took my wife over to see the campus when Brianna made her decision and the team was sitting together in one of the buildings celebrating her letter of intent. That was special. For my daughter, that meant a lot. The program, athetically, is very good and so, she will have the best of both worlds. I wanted to thank all of you who have followed her throughout the years. The kind remarks and pms have helped us through this process.

Congatulations Coach - enjoy it, I watched my niece go through 5 years (redshirt pitcher freshman yr) of college softball at Central Michigan University and it was a very rewarding and phenomenal game at that level.

I am sure you could add a little info on the funding that it took to put a softball player through travel ball in highschool, I thought baseball players played a lot...
Congrats coach and best of luck to her in college.

Maybe a softball person could answer a question for me. I read that college softball programs, like baseball, have a 56 game spring schedule. However they are also allowed, unlike baseball, to play 4 fall games that are not subtracted from their spring allotment.

How did softball happen to be allowed to play fall games without affecting their spring schedule when baseball cannot? Can someone explain the rational for the different treatment of these two similar sports?
igball, I'll take a look for the info you asked for.

Thanks everyone. We struggled about what level she should commit to but then realized that it really didn't matter. Her happiness was most important. We heard all of the stories from the D-I players on how they had to get up at 4:30 in the morning to be at workouts at 6 to then be in class at ... and then they were so tired that they crashed every night at 8 or 9. My daughter is not geared that way.

On a side note, for her signing, we wondered who should be invited to be "in the picture." Well, Brianna made the decision that every coach that she has had should be asked if they would like to be in the picture. She hasn't played for many different coaches but I was proud that she wanted the gentleman that coached her at 8 to be in the picture with the high school coach and select coach who are coaching her now. To me, that says a lot about her. Good luck to everyone else who is going through this process. It isn't easy!
Congratulations to your daughter!

As my younger daughter and I drove to the big tournament in St. Louis at the end of October, we passed a sign that announced "Troy"---and I thought of you...her team plans to go next year so mark your calendar and let's meet somewhere near 55/70/270...That's the road we travel! Book it!

My older daughter initially decided not to play in college and we looked at schools accordingly........but then reality hit and she VERY tearfully decided that she really wasn't ready to give it up and so Plan B......she's looking at D3 and a few NAIA schools---happily, she is in dialogue with many of them----and now, as the snow and ice should be in the forecast, she wants to visit.....

Hopefully we will run into you somewhere before next Halloween!

Play baseball
Play Baseball, so, as you looked at where 55, 70 and 270 all came together, you were looking at our farm. YUP, right there where the first Troy exit is, there is a Cracker Barrel. We're the farm right there. We were over in St. Louis again this year. We probably walked right past each other again. Pm me with the name of the team your daughter plays for.

Thanks everyone for the comments. We had a "signing day" for everyone at our school who signed early which was really a photo opp for the local newspaper. They then publish the photo and write a nice little article. Brianna asked every coach who had coached her from the age of 8 on to be in the photo. Unfortunately, the school sets up the time and so, only a few could make it at 3:00 last Friday. Still, we had cake and drinks afterwards and Brianna was able to thank all of the coaches who have helped her achieve her dream of playing college softball. I wish I could post the picture here but we can't. That's probably for the better since one person ruins the picture. Brianna and her Mom look good though. Big Grin

Edited: I just figured out how to get an image on here. The picture isn't the best but here it is:

Congratulations again and thanks for the update Coach.

Just wondering though...cake? Yup. Drinks? Yup. Chili? None. Where's the chili?

OK so the chilli is a point of contention right now. We are building a new house and so, my wife has moved a lot of the "stuff" out in to storage. naturally, one of those items is the large pot for the chilli. How can I make it through winter without that pot? I feel a road trip to the storage shed coming on real soon!

Thanks Yardbird! The HSBBW..."Where seldom is heard a discouraging word". Right? Wink

And Coach...

Glad I could help. Winter just wouldn't be the same without your chili. Imagine a long, cold, silent winter not pierced by the fragrant and melodic aftershocks of a good helping or two, or three, of your tremendous chili. Don't forget to lock up your storage unit after retrieving your big ol' chili pot!

Bon Appétoot!

Congratulations! Nice article.

By the way...have Brianna say hello to her new teammate, Madison Zbaraschuk. She's from Sequim, WA (rhymes with swim).

I have some long lost relatives living there in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. The Littlejohn family. How we're related I don't really recall. Haven't seen them for over forty years. It's a very small town, Madison probably knows them.
