I am really interested in what you coaches think. I am just a lowly parent. My son is a junior, and he has already had 3 coaches. He is being recruited due solely to his summer/fall team. This is what I'd like to see in a HS coach.

1. Don't be afraid to hire someone who knows more than you do about a specific position/skill. It is frustrating to hear a coach yell "Make good throws!" "Throw strikes!" "Hit line drives!" and not hear the coach also give the instruction necessary to do so. If there is local talent that can help your players, hire him! Or at least ask him to volunteer.

2. If you want to have fall ball, summer ball, winter conditioning, whatever, then great! Use it to get your younger players and bench players some playing time and get them into your conditioning program. If your established varsity players have a travel team that is going to get them exposure at a national level, then encourage them to go! If their parents are willing to fork out the bucks to have them participate in an offseason conditioning program that includes former major leaguers and a minor leaguer who just broke a certain team's minor league stolen bases record, let him go! He will be better for doing all this when he shows up for tryouts, and he will help your team win!

3. Recruiting. It is NOT about you. It is about the player. Be the facilitator, not the gatekeeper.

I look forward to your comments! Smile

In my years I have seen many coaches,be it HS or travel team, and there are many variances on a theme---a lot will depend on what you the player wants--not what you the parent wants-- if my guys are happy with their coaches who am I as a parent to criticize because there are NO perfect coaches thus it is tough to find a "DREAM" coach
I got busy for a couple of days and couldn't log on. But you guys really got me thinking! We had our first baseball meeting last night, and were introduced to the new coaches. What we got is this: HC is the catcher's dad, Freshman coach graduated from HS last year, IF coach is the brother of the other starting MIF, graduated from HS 2 years ago.

Not quite what I was hoping for...
Thank you, CADad. I'm glad someone responded so I had an excuse to go back and look at that picture again. Big Grin

I know HS ball doesn't really matter that much. It was disappointing, but not surprising, for a school that values performing arts much more than athletics. The head coach is a longtime assistant who we didn't support for the position, and he has surrounded himself with boys who he can bully, rather than experienced baseball men.

But it's only January - May. Then 2B goes back to the coaches we trust. Smile
