Okay, now Carlos Delgado is Delgone-o. Man, I always thought making millions, playing in arguably the nicest park in the MLB, Camden Yards, in front of full or nearly full houses, without hurricanes, without the New York press, and without a lot of distractions, would be attractive. Silly me...............

Angelouse, in the Baltimore Sun, said he was "relieved" not to get Delgado, while lamenting their failure to land him. That'll send a great signal. The O's negotiating strategy seems to be to bid at the very low end of the spectrum, lay low, then jump in late, boost your offer, and ride off on a white horse with the prized player. Unfortunately, the guys riding the horses seem to need stroking along the way and aren't responding to money only. I guess the money has to be right and they also need to see some loving from their suitors. What a crazy business.

He may be right that the market is just nuts, but it is what it is, so either draft and develop, or risk big checks on free agents, but do something.........and quit whining about the Nationals already.

Personally, I think Delgado and the right field wall at Camden Yards would've been a great marriage, but we'll cross our fingers that the young 'uns develop.

I would agree with that except for the chance to win was a big priority for someone who already has made 80 million in their career. The O's have not shown that they can do that.
The Mets actual contract was more over the 4 year term. The Marlins have proved they can win, the Mets have not. So if money is equal, why go to the Mets or Orioles who haven't won since Moses was a baby. I think to say it was money only is off base. You get the most money and the team with the best chance to win now. The Marlins are now being called the best team in the East. Juan Pierre's 220 hits, Luis Castillo, and Miguel Cabrera hitting in front of Delgado. That is like 550 hits in the linup in front of him Lots of rbi opportunity and protected in the 5 spot by Lowell (an all star). He did not get a no-trade clause. He could have at other venues.

From the Sun-Sentinel.
quote:
"I said, `You'll go from third place to first,'" said David Sloane, Delgado's Coral Springs-based agent. "Having made $80 million over the last six years, he was in a position to buy whatever he wanted on the planet. The one thing he could not buy was a championship ring, and that's what this was all about."

To make the match work, Delgado agreed to a backloaded contract that does not include deferred money or no-trade protection. He will make $4 million this season before his annual salaries rise to $13.5 million in 2006, $14.5 million in 2007, and $16 million in 2008. In 2009, he can trigger a $16 million option based on a unique MVP voting and postseason awards point system.

A member of the Blue Jays organization his entire pro career, Delgado would earn from 10 points to one point for winning the MVP to placing 10th, respectively. Winning the World Series MVP would yield 20 points and a league championship MVP is worth 10. The only way for the $16 million option to vest is for Delgado to total 30 points over the first four years. If he falls short, it becomes a $12 million club option with a $4 million buyout.

From MLB.com
quote:
"From Day One, we have told everyone that Carlos would make his choice based on where he felt he had the best chance to win a World Series," Sloane said in an e-mail to the media Tuesday night. "I'm proud to say that is exactly why he made the choice he made. As to the actual dollars in this deal, the Marlins contract has a higher AAV [actual value] than the one offered by the Mets. However, the real net present value of the Mets proposal exceeded the real net present value of the Marlins contract by a total of $30,000 over the four-years of the contract."
