Okay so my first ever legion game was May 22. We were doing our "new" warm-up routine when I was hit in the head with a ball thrown by our hardest thrower while I wasn't looking. My dad took me to the ER where we found out(after hours of waiting) that I had suffered a depressed fracture of my sinus and that it would require surgery to fix the dent that was now in my forehead. My surgery was scheduled for a week later and in the meantime I was allowed to play(only bat) with a cage helmet. Three days after the accident I played on my other team(not the legion) and went 2-2 with a 2 2B and 4 RBI. Then that weekend I played in a legion game where I got an AB and knocked in another run on a FC. Then I had to get the surgery. They cut me at my hairline to hide the scar and then pulled the skin over my eyes so they could get to the damaged area(pretty disgusting). The surgery took 3 hours and I had to stay in the hospital a day, but thankfully everything went well. Then came the moment of truth, I wasn't sure if my baseball playing was over for the summer(I really hoped it was not), but the doctor said I had to sit out three weeks and then I could play with protective equipment. So over that time we found a mask that covered the damaged area(think Rip Hamilton). Last night was my first game back. I pitched and did a decent job. I guess my line was 5IP 2ER 4K and 4H. I would have done even better, but I got real tired in the fifth. I am so glad I am back on the field again and I just thank God that the injury wasn't more severe because even though it was very bad it could have been worse. I now hope to play out the rest of the summer and make all-stars. I just thought I'd share this story with all of you as a reminder of how dangerous baseball can be and for all the players out there always be ready for the ball. I certainly learned that lesson the hard way.
"Practice."-Tiger Woods when asked what he would do after failing to make the cut at the U.S. Open. "When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stone-cutter hammering away at his rock perhaps 100 times without as much as a crack showing. Yet at the 101st blow, it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before." mtownfan

My favorite signature line is BigWi's "Play everyday as if it were your last. Someday it will be." Or something like that. I'm very glad that it was not your last game. Hope you continue to recover and that you make the All-Star team.

The day before my oldest son's hs tryouts, he, too, got hit in the face (eye) when he wasn't ready/looking... Because of all of the swelling, he couldn't see very well at the tryout, but the coach thought that any kid who actually practiced baseball deserved to make the team...

You're right...always be ready for the ball!
