My son received a letter from the head coach of a midwestern NAIA college saying they they saw him play this summer and believe he could make a positive impact on their baseball program. My son filled out the questionnaire and sent some video and references. My son also spoke with the HC about visiting this Fall.

Anyhow, my son just got an e-mail from the recruiting coordinator saying they believe he is the type of player they would want in their program... but at this point in time, see him starting out in their JV program where he could develop into a varsity contributor in the future.

We are not sure what to make of this as we did not even know the school had a JV program. My son has not yet had a chance to call the coach to find out more about their JV program, schedule, how many players starting in JV go on to varsity, etc.

I was wondering if anyone familiar with NAIA programs knew if a lot of them have legitimate JV programs to develop their freshmen? If this were a true development situation, it might not be bad. My son has not yet visited this school so it is hard to tell if it is a place he would like. It will cost us $ and time to travel there and visit. I had never heard of this school until my son received the letter and I grew up within 20 miles of it. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

NAIA JV programs are sometimes present in this part of the country at the more well funded programs. They do play an abbreviated schedule, however.

As to the answer of how many JV go on to V, you should research that at the specific school. Results at other programs would be meaningless.

Better to play an abbreviated JV schedule as a freshman than to sit the bench waiting your turn...
