As one who has a true interest in the Marlins, I do not see how you give up so much to get so little. Nothing against Smolinski at all but he has a history in two years of being hurt, he is a low minors guy who hasn't made a statement yet and he is already getting labeled as a corner OF. Is he going to knock Stanton (39 HR's in '07) out of a spot - doubt it. To give up two MLB players for what they got seems like a real stretch IMO.

Why wouldn't they wait until Spring to trade Olsen? I've seen a lot of lefties with weak stuff get some really big deals. Don't get this one at all. Plain and simple salary dumping & making 40 man roster spots available.

I'm sure Kyle will be glad to have Jake around. They will enjoy Greensboro - great, fan friendly town!

Nice article. I saw a poll that about 70% of Marlin's fans did not think they got fair value in the trade. You gotta admit, it is pretty unusual to involve two guys from the low Minors in return for MLB players.

Last summer the Marlins were rumored to be trading for Manny Ramirez (why?)in a 3 way trade. Boston, or Pittsburgh wanted Mike Stanton. Well considering Stanton hit 39 HR's in the low Minors and he was 18 I can kind of understand that.

We'll see, like any trade.
nc42, I understand your angst. You've got a vested interst in the Marlins. But, with what's going on today in the global economy, I'd expect all but the mega-wealthy sports owners to be looking at some type of cost control. $1,800 seats in the new Yankee Stadium, maybe some are even more costly.

These owners, and their minority owners are leveraged to the hilt. They're looking at the listed values of their franchises and feeling pretty heady. I think you're going to see something like the real-estate bubble in the professional sports ranks.

Some, if not most of these owners are hurting big time, we just haven't heard about it yet. Sure, the Padres owner is getting looted by his soon to be ex-wife, but with what's happening now, and the worst is yet to come, whose going to be sitting in those $150-250 seats?

I hope I'm wrong, but I predict that this could get very ugly. No new record attendance for MLB in 2009. That's over.

Good luck to the players in the deal.

Man, I think everyone is leveraged to the hilt - not just the owners.

Seems like the Trib may have some difficulty selling as much of the Cubbies as they wanted.

As for attendance going down, I really don't think so. As expensive as it seems to go to a game, it is still a lot cheaper than a trip to Cancun!

I did watch a show on PBS and the 1929 stock market crash - the parallels were a little scary.
