I agree, in our experience the unofficial on campus visits were always the best. Remember, the NCAA rules for what contact can and cannot happen vary by the calendar and by division. But the rules (and penalties) apply to coaches not the players! So if the coach is setting up the meeting, don't worry about it.

Here's a link to the NCAA Guide that will answer many questions. Starting on page 27 you will find the recruiting guidelines. Also, on page 19 are some good sample questions to ask.

You answered your own question in your first post when you said "My son called a college coach". It's called an unofficial visit and perfectly acceptible within the NCAA guidelines. Like others have said, your son will be on campus and if he happens to see the coach while he's there, good for him.
