I am an umpire of travel baseball. However this scenario is not covered under our travel league rules. They tell us to refer to high school rules. Here is the situation. 1st base is open, drop third strike, batter turns and makes 4 steps toward the dugout, coaches telling him to run. Catcher throws ball to 1st and overthrows the bag. I rule the runner safe. Coach appeals and says I got the call wrong. He says the batter gave himself up when he turned to walk to the dugout. Common sense tells me if he not in the dugout yet then play is still live. Am I right???

Yes. He's not out until he enters the bench/dugout area.
