So I have been a pitcher for much of my life, and used to love it. I'm 16 turning 17 now, and really do not care much for it much anymore. I really want to hit, play SS and 2B. My parents say I should keep on pitching because im good at it. The thing is I s=do not see it. I really only top out at around 80mph, and yet have no command. I also have a sinker( Pretty good pitch) and a slider(Sometimes is good but mostly sucks)So really I have no good command. I love hitting now ever since I actually learned how with a real good instructor. What should i do? I know its hard because you don't know me, but i need help so badly!

Thanks !!!!

Well let's see. Number 1 you top out at 80 (way below avg for a RHP) and you have a sinker off of a 80mph FB and a slider that you say mostly sucks. Then factor in that you really don't like doing something that in all honesty you probably don't project very well at. I think it's great that your parents think your a good pitcher (they should, their your parents) but to be really good at something you for the most part have to somewhat enjoy doing it and OUTWORK the competition. Well if you enjoy hitting and have a good instructor that you believe in-take a shot at that. Bust your butt as a hitter and infielder and put your time into something that you believe you have a shot to do.
Not to be overly blunt, but it's not really your parents' decision now, is it?

It might not even be up to you.

You're at an age where you're going to have to submit to the decisions made by your coaches, whether you like those decisions or not.

When it comes to travel ball, you can choose a team in part based on where they intend to use you. Otherwise, you just need to work on all parts of your game and do your best at whatever you're asked to do.

I agree that it sounds like you are struggling and maybe your heart's not in pitching any more. However, lots of 16-17 year olds have growth still to come, and if you're throwing low/mid 80's, most HS teams could use some innings out of you. Don't think about it as pitching so much as doing whatever your team needs from you to win.

There is a place for personal goals, of course, but sometimes when we find ourselves in knots over a decision, we benefit from thinking less about what we want or what someone else wants, and more about what we can do for the team as a whole.
Midlo Dad again steps up with some quality advice.

I have a quote posted in my classroom. "There comes a time when you have to stop dreaming of the man you want to be and start being the man you have become." (Bruce Springsteen)

My recommendation is for you to ask your Mom and Dad to understand your feelings and that you don't want to be a pitcher. You're going to have to ask them to support you in this and not think it makes you less of a player. BTW, I was once a pitcher as well. However, I loved hitting. It was a passion. Thank goodness my Dad understood. Good luck!
Well I guess it hurts when you put it that way, but understood. Thanks!
