Hi,

I'm in the AF and it looks as if I will be transferred to Vandenberg in July. I have two sons who are competitive baseball players/athletes. I'm looking for someone who can help me locate a good school for my sons.

Just a little background info:

My oldest son will be a rising Junior. He is 15 at the moment and is 6'1" and weighs 155. He plays catcher and middle infielder. (prefers catcher and is pretty good) He is also a wide-receiver for his high school and lettered on the varsity as a sophomore. His is a great student. 4.6 on a 4.0 scale.

My younger son is 13. He is 6'2" and weighs 180. He is a pitcher and has been clocked at 82 MPH. He also plays 1st and 3rd. He plays QB for his Middle school football team and and power forward for the school basketball team. He is a good student as well.

Both of the boys should continue to grow as I am 6'6" and my wife is 5'9".

I am looking for a school in the area that has good academics, good athletics, and low crime.

Anyway, I would appreciate any good information you might be able to provide. We will try and live near the best school possible.

Thanks!

My in-laws live up in Santa Ynez, which is near Vandenberg. She is a retired middle school administrator from the area and knows some things about the schools.

She said Lompoc schools are generally bad education wise and for social issues. If possible put your kids somewhere else. Don’t really know about the sports programs at them but could find out if needed. Probably the best HS in the general area would be Santa Ynez high. She thought it was OK from an education standpoint and from what I know it has a decent sports program. They only have JV and Varsity BB teams and do pretty well given the school size. I have worked out on their field (only has one) when visiting with my son and it is nice.

The other option would be up in Santa Maria, which is better than Lompoc but not as good as Santa Ynez from what she said. You can get school scores and demographics on all public California HS’s via the California Dept of Public education or at the school web site.

If you want more information send me a PM and I can check with a guy I know in the area who runs a 14-16U travel team.
Whitey,

Thanks for the offer! I'm looking for a school that has excellent academics and a disciplined sports program.

My oldest son is doing well for a young 15 yr old. He is playing varsity for his 4A team. It's early in the season but he is doing ok. His batting avg is over 600 and his OBP is over 800. He hits with power but usually hits line drives. He is pretty much a wall at catcher and has had zero passed balls. He needs to develop a little more zip on his throws in order to decrease his pop times but I think that will come. He is tall and lanky, muscular but a young 15, and I believe his arm will get stronger with time.

My 13 yr old is playing basketball for his school. He had 23 and 17 in his last two games. He is big and strong and has a soft jumper. He is a very good 3 pt shooter. He is also practicing with his competitive baseball team and is throwing well. His fastball really moves, has a very sharp breaking 12-6 curve and a decent change-up. He can also throw a splitter but I don't let him throw it now for fear of hurting his arm. (kind of the same with his curve but he is very fundamentally sound so I give him a little more flexability)

What do you know about Cabrillio? I have looked into Santa Ynez and that program sounds very good. I'm concerned about the drive though. I may also, due to my position, be required to live on base.

Thanks again for your willingness to help!
