My son just finished his first round of freshman high school try-outs. He is a pretty decent player and feels that he has a really good chance of making the team, however, the competition for a spot on this high school team is fierce. There are a lot of good players. There are about 60 players trying out. My question is what can my son do to stand out from all of the other players? We read the "How to make the high school team" info on this web-site and he uses almost all of the pointers that were given. The second round of try-outs is coming soon and we really need advice. Thanks

calsportsmom-
You guys are having real tryouts already? Do you guys really have tryouts in the fall?
I certainly agree with Floriafan, hitting will be the difference maker, so will hustle and attitude.
Don't try to do too much, do what you can do and do it really well. Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. Be a good team mate.
Have fun!

I agree with Floriafan's and iheartbb's analysis! If you hit, they will find a place for him.

I also find it funny that you are having official tryouts.

Hitting is important and the fastest way to the lineup, but there are other ways to impress and they may be tiebreakers ....

  • Be the first to pratice/tryouts.
  • Be the last to leave.
  • Look like a ball player: baseball pants, cleats, shirt tucked in, hat on straight.
  • Be focused. Don't clown around. Stay away from the clowns.
  • Always pay attention when the coach is talking.
  • If the coach is talking to you, look him in the eye
  • Warmup up with someone who also throws well. If the ball goes all over the place, it's on both of you
  • run, don't walk ....anywhere
  • Get dirty.
  • Never get down when making a mistake. Stuff happens! Look confident like you're ready to make the next play, drive the next pitch.
  • Whatever you're capable of giving, reach back for that little bit more.

  • Great List TG

May I add: Show your love of the game, have fun..coach will notice.
Thanks everyone for the advice and laughs. I just love HSBBWEB.

iheartbb-Yes my son's school is actually having try-outs already. I guess the coach wants to get a head start. The only problem is that my son is currently on the basketball team. Luckily, this school and all coaches encourage students to play more than one sport.

homerun04- My son is a rhp and he plays outfield, but at this point, he will play any position.

I was wondering if he pitched and we were all giving you advice on hitting. Obviously pitching is very important to any team. Hopefully he is accurate even more so that fast.

If he hits well also that is great.

I can't believe you guys are already doing tryouts and basketball. Our kids would not being in basketball right now and trying out for a spring sport.

Hope he is doing well! Hope he has Good Luck!

From a coaches perspective let me just say this. The first impression you get is the walk up to the field on day one. Is he early? Check. Is his body language that of a kid excited about being there? Check. Is he dressed like a ball player? Check. Does he look you in the eye when your talking? Check. Does he run everywhere he goes and tries to be the first guy everywhere he goes? Check. Does he go all out in everything he does? Check. Does he interact well with the other players? Check. He is well on his way to being a part of the program. All he needs now is a little bit of talent and he will be fine. Good luck and enjoy this time in your sons life. It will go by waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too fast.
