Here's a link to a previous discussion about various catcher's gloves and the type of leather used. http://hsbaseballweb.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8591034941/m/3211065851 My son feels the buckskin fielders gloves get floppy to quickly, however he has never owned a bucksin catchers glove...... The glove you need will need to match you're catching style and/or need. i.e. if you have slow pop times don't buy one with a big pocket!!
My son had used the ProPreferred and liked it alot. Recently, he began breaking in and using an All-Star glove and notes it is the best one he has used at any position he has played.
Their gear is great too, light weight...especially the masks. Check out the All-Star. Varitek uses their stuff and has for years. (no, I don't work for them Cool
The D-BAT catchers mitt is very popular in my neck of the woods. It was designed to be a pro quality mitt, so it is a little stiff to begin with, but the college and pro guys that use it like it that way. The palm has that memory foam stuff in it so it cushions well while still being flexible.

I just got the Nokona CM600 Kimera mitt three days ago and so far I love it. Still very stiff of course, but I'm loving breaking it in. I was debating between this mitt and the Praying Mantis, but this mitt being made in Texas really swayed me. So far the only possible downside I see is the pocket may be a little shallow, but I think once it's broken in it will be fine, and then allow for a very quick transfer. That was one of the reasons I picked it up over the Mantis too - I've read some say that pocket on that is too big. But you have to love Nokona and their commitmment to the USA!

Hopefully I'll be able to share more specifics soon!
A2000,Rawlings and Akadema all make fine catchers mitts. My son uses the 34" A2000 and likes it alot when catching pitchers he knows are wild...he likes the big pocket.
His overall favorite is a 32" Kelly Pro-Line with a shallow pocket. He also has a 33" Elevation series that lasted 3 years of real hard use. Elevation is tough breaking in but the Pro-Line series is even tougher.
Personally, I'm a Rawlings and A2000 guy.
Rawlings Pro Preferred is a quality glove. Takes a bit longer to break in but the leather is excellent quality and it holds its pocket well. Many catchers mitts I have used in the past "break down" quickly and get very "floppy" if you know what I mean. Rawlings sets the standard for gloves but it always comes down to personal preference on what modle to use. Same goes for bats!
NOO dont do it! nokona catchers mitts are nice i hear IF you have gobs of money to buy a new one every season or so because they get flismy unbelievably fast (multiple college catchers ive played against and with say this). go with the Allstar 33.5" i bought one last season and many of my fellow catching friends around the country bought them and we all love it, couldnt ask for a better glove (ive had 3 different A2000s, mizuno classic, tried pretty much every glove there is) this is the exact glove i bought http://www.ballgloves.net/cgi-local/prod.pl?CM3000SBT
