This game started under partly sunny skies then cloudy and then sprinkles throught the sixth and seventh. The field has a "clamshell" type of backstop fairly close to the batter catcher and umpire. High School varsity game bottom of the seventh bases loaded 1 out. Pitcher throws a pitch up and inside to the right handed batter, catcher misses the pitch, turns to retrive the ball. I open the gate, look at the catcher and then towards the runner on third to see if he is comming! I hear somthing from the offensive coach on third, my partner is calling time and calling me out. He says we have a lodged ball in the backstop, I say two base award the runner from third steps on the plate .... Game Over. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN BEFORE. I have coached Varsity Baseball for 14 years and have umpired before and after those 14 since 1972. NEVER BEFORE!!!
