Saw the new preseason rankings on http://www.d3baseball.com/top25/2011/preseason
So how does Birmingham Southern return all of it's starters from last year and fall from #8 to out of the rankings? In fact, out of the top 58? They had a 35-5 record, they beat several top teams, and return two all-Americans?

Curious.

It's because they're in their last provisional season. They will have reached full-bore status for the 2012 season. They are ranked #8 in one poll, but the D3baseball poll has excluded them since they are 'provisional' one more season. You can fully expect them to do some serious damage regardless of their status.
They were in a provisional season last year as well, but D3 had them ranked. Either way, provisional status doesn't make them any better or worse.

On a side note, it is sad to me that the NCAA gave them an additional year of provisional status because the girls basketball and softball teams waited an additional year to switch to D3. This whole class of seniors came in as D3 and will never have the chance for post-season play. The NCAA needs to be more about the students and less about political correctness.
