I'm getting this info third hand and it doesn't involve anyone that I'm related to or friends with.

Two players have jobs and were scheduled to work on Saturday. A weekday game was re-scheduled for Saturday on short notice. Both players went to the coach who told them to check with their supervisors and see if they could get off work early on game day. Players received permission to leave work early in time for the game. However, as it turned out, the coach wanted them at the school early for pregame BP, etc... Since they would be coming late and miss pregame, they would both receive a one game playing suspension, and have to run for 90 minutes straight at the next practice.

One of the players is coming off a knee surgery sustained in a different sport, so the running was the last straw for him. Both told the coach they were going to quit. Coach told both not to bother coming out next season. I'm certain there are key details that I'm not aware of, but that's the meat of the story. Any thoughts.

Why get into this?

You admit that you have "third-hand" information; so, now you're inviting us to offer opinions?

Even when one is closer to the situation, it's often the case that there's more to the story. The coach could be a real bonehead...or, the players' side may have been misrepresented; giving the coach every reason to come to the conclusion he did.

Sorry. Not biting on this one.

But I will.

Let get into the real world.  In that world we Adults are usually accommodating to each other when schedule conflicts arise.  As long as both parties are making a reasonable accommodation there is no harm, no foul.

In the instant situation (given what we know), I am not sure the punishment fits the crime.  If they were not studs, then who cares if they came in late after a valid excuse.  If they are studs, then we make every accommodation to get them on the field.

Assuming the facts are as presented. This is why some coaches get bad reps.  Sports teach kids life lessons.  They are learning to juggle sports, jobs, school, and relationships.  This was a rescheduled game which is not the kids fault.

The kids did just as the coach asked and are being punished for it.  Easy to see who the kid is in this situation and who the adults are.  Top that with the coach telling the kids the would have to run for 1 1/2 hours straight.

Chalk this up to another clueless coach attempting to ruin a kids HS baseball experience.  I'm all for team rules but the coach needs to be flexible here.
