"McGwire's little brother says Big Mac used HGH, steroids" - NY Daily News

Mark McGwire may still refuse to talk about the past, but his little brother is apparently more than happy to spill the family secrets about performance-enhancing drugs.

Deadspin.com reported Wednesday that Jay McGwire has been shopping a book proposal to major publishing houses that claims he introduced the scandal-stained slugger to steroids and that he also used human growth hormone.

In the proposal for "The McGwire Family Secret," Jay McGwire says he used a $150,000 insurance settlement from a BB gun accident that cost him an eye to purchase steroids. Jay McGwire writes that Mark started juicing after watching his brother build himself into a 6-3, 320-pound professional bodybuilder.

According to Deadspin.com, Jay Mc-Gwire claims he introduced his brother to a steroid dealer shortly after he won a bodybuilding contest in May 1994. The supplier, who was also a trainer, explained how different drugs affected the body and answered his brother's questions.

In the proposal, Jay McGwire said his brother used low dosages of drugs so that he wouldn't become too bulky for baseball. Jay said Mark used Deca-Durabolin to recover from workouts and ease joint pain.

Man, with a brother like Jay McGwire who needs enemies, huh?

Jay goes on to say that "that while Pete Rose would cut off his left arm to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Not Mark. I don't think being in the HOF matters a lick to him".

Who is he to speak for Mark? Surely every player that has broke records, won accolades over the years, etc. has some inkling of a desire to maybe see himself in the HOF.

This story is really sad to me on different levels.

Today ESPN bottom line was reading that Jay did this so that Mark "would live a life of truth and be free", etc. Hogwash! This just goes to show that he like the Jose Cansecos of the world are out to make a quick buck even if it means hurting those you love. Wasn't it just recently reported that Jose was backing up and saying he regretted that he ever wrote his tell-all book?

I've said it before. I am was a HUGE Mark McGwire fan. My wife and I use to go to card and memorabilia shows as newlyweds. One of the first ones we attended had Mark in attendance when he was chosen to play on Team USA. We got his autograph, Team USA card, etc. Obviously, we were instantly a big fan of his. It was fun watching him over the years as he progressed into a household name. But even I couldn't deny the uncertain thoughts of how huge physically he was becoming each season. I was dumbfounded by it.

This just hurts when you get down to it. Ya know?
