There is a post in the Virginia forum about a recent commit to Coastal Carolina.  I am not sure I have ever read an article quite like this one which include very specific detail as to the scholarship levels (I say levels because apparently his ratchets up in years 3&4 - kind of like a back ended contract).  Is this normal and I just haven't run across these before?

Any opinions on whether the Coastal Caroline program appreciates this type of detail or whether they might have preferred fewer (i.e. none) details on the verbal offer.

Regardless of what is reported and/or promised to the player, scholarships are 1 year contracts.  If a player comes in and doesn't produce in year 1 and/or year 2, I doubt they would increase scholarship dollars in year 3.

This is not a comment on the article you reference but a general comment based on my experience.

I had a similar reaction after reading the post and I don't recall seeing anything like this published in any of the local Richmond newspapers for our local baseball commits.  Typically it is word of mouth, Twitter  or some snippet on HSBBWeb.  This is a high school junior making a verbal commitment and it is front and center.  My hope is that he is comfortable with it.

On one hand I feel glad for the young man to get this opportunity.  On the other hand,  I'm probably like most folks and wouldn't feel comfortable sharing that level of information with the world.  You don't have to look very far to find recruits changing their commitments to other schools.  My initial thought was "why publish this now".  I don't have a good answer for the timing or the level of detail.

I think I now understand the "increase" in scholarship during years 3-4.  Apparently the university has a policy requiring 1st and 2nd year students to live on campus.  I'm guessing the coach gave the kid tuition (50% of total including dorm) and then showed how total cost goes down when you live off campus in the final two years.  I get the impression that this is not really a learning experience as it seems to be somewhat isolated, but bears reminding to parents to "suggest" that their kid be a little more discrete.  Looks like a "reporter" from a small newspaper in the pretty small town may have done this kid an injustice getting him on the phone.

I don't think that any coach from any program appreciates a player discussing their agreement at anytime. I know that we were asked not to give details and players don't even discuss it amongst themselves.

I respect the folks that I know who kept their sons early commitments to themselves until they felt the time was ready and scholarship dollars where never discussed.
