My SP goes 6 innings and I make 3 trips to the mound while he was in the game. 1st, 2nd and 5th innings. Put a reliever on the mound when we go back out in the 7th. Walks first 2 guys so I call time to go talk to him and umpire tells me I have to switch him as it's my 4th trip of the game. I couldn't find my rule book today so I have no idea if he was correct.

My understanding was 1 trip an inning. Second trip had to replace him. Thanks.

Under FED, you get three "free" defensive conferences during a regulation game; on the fourth, the pitcher must be replaced. Note that if you replace the pitcher during a conference, it does not count as a charged conference. For example, if you had replaced your starter with your trip in the 5th, it would not have been charged, and you still would have one to spare until the end of the 7th.

Once the game goes extra innings, there is one "free" conference per inning.

Also note, conferences are not cumulative and are irrespective of the pitcher, thus, if you use your three free ones on your starter, any further conference during a regulation game require removal of the pitcher, no matter who it may be.

It's better not think of the "three" as being free. You have three charged conferences per 7 inning game. A charged conference is one in which you do not pull the pitcher. Upon the fourth conference, the pitcher, regardless if he was the pitcher during the prior conferences, must go.

A truly free conference is one in which you pull the pitcher. That conference is not counted towards the three charged conferences.
