I'm sure that the information he shared is his opinion, but I thought I'd share some of it with you.
1. East Cobb is over rated – this knocked me over. All I’ve ever heard is “you have to be on a team from EC if you are a good ball player and want the best competition.” He thinks they over use their pitchers. Also, parents are spending to much money on getting discovered. If your kid is good, then a little exposure will get you on the radar and they will find you and come see you where ever you are.
2. Kids go to too many showcases – He says all a kid needs is one major showcase the summer before his junior year and a couple of camps or small showcases, the summer prior to his senior year maybe two big showcases and again just camps, and not to many of them. He says he gets tired of seeing the same kids over and over and over again.
3. If a kid is good enough to get drafted, he should go pro. He said that all of the contracts he has been involved in have a pay for college clause in them. So if a kid gives it up to three years, can make it or doesn’t like it, they will pay for 4 years of college. Sound reasonable to me. You can’t play college baseball but you will get a better financial ride to college than going on a regular baseball scholarship offer.
4. Pitchers – righties – better be 6 foot plus, throw in the mid 90s with a good breaking ball; Lefties – better be 6 foot plus, throw in the upper 80s with a good breaking ball - if not, he’s not interested.
5. Corner guys – better be a power hitter.
6. Middle guys – better be quick and have a good glove.
I found it very interesting to talk to this guy. I’m not sure how prevalent this is among other pro scouts but I heard similar conversations on TV.
