I know what NIL stands for and I would imagine that there are student athletes who are approached about using their name, image and likeness.

But, do schools ever set these up for players, albeit officially or silently? And, how does the money work? One time payments? Recurring "salary"? Something else?

If a kid is being recruited by a school and they say they can get you a NIL deal, what does that mean?

Some are getting actual advertising revenue based on their "Name, image, likeness" - i.e. they are getting paid for advertising something, blogging, selling autographed items, etc.  Some schools help them set up these actual business opportunities.  This is especially true of non-revenue sports.

Some, especially in football and basketball, are getting cash payments in return for doing a promotion or two, from a collective where donors put in money and it's distributed based on who the coaches want to pay.

If a school offered you an NIL deal, you would want to know which kind it was, and with whom you were signing what kind of contract.
