Bearkat baseball fans will have to opportunity to hear Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan , meet the members of the 2007 SHSU baseball team, and help raise money for the Kat baseball program at the special Meet the Players / Night With Nolan Ryan dinner and auction Saturday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ball Room.
With a blazing fastball that approached 100 miles per hour and a work ethic like none other, Ryan dominated hitters for 27 seasons on his way to 5,714 strikeouts, an all-time record.
During four decades of prominence, he totaled 324 victories and a host of major league records. Most notable of his milestones are a mystifying seven no-hitters and 12 one-hitters. The eight-time All-Star fanned a single-season record 383 batters in 1973, and his career strikeouts encompassed 1,176 different players.
"This is a great opportunity for baseball fans," new SHSU head baseball coach Mark Johnson said. "Fans will have the opportunity to be in the presence and hear inspirational words from one of the greatest pitchers in the history of baseball, but also to meet the special young men who will be taking the field for the Bearkats in 2007. The banquet has all the makings for a very special occasion."
Tickets for the event at $35 each individual, $50 for couples, and $200 per table (maximum of eight at each table).
The evening will feature both live and silent auctions of various baseball items. Proceeds from the event go to the Sam Houston State baseball enrichment fund to help benefit the program with scholarships and other expenses.
