Boyds World shows schedules for D1 teams this year and it's interesting to see the direction of some mid-majors. While my personal favorite team is IL-Chicago, I see their non-conference schedule as being challenging to the point of pain. In this order throughout the year

Texas (4)
Alabama (4)
Vanderbilt (4)
Missouri (2)
Creighton (3)
Notre Dame

Granted the elites will say "whats your point" and that may be true because of the conference affiliations. But, this is one example of the little guys beginning to feel they can compete. Take a look. Does anyone else feel their favorite mid major, elite team for that matter, is stepping up with their non-conference schedules regardless of how it affect the post season or their records in general.

Here's the Boyds schedule link

I think its a good idea. I think the only way you get better is to play good teams. Louisville (under Denny Crum) used to play a killer pre-conference schedule in basketball and it really paid off for them even though they took their lumps early.

Stanford has always played a tough non-conference baseball schedule (this year Vanderbilt, then UC Riverside, Fullerton and then Texas) and I think its a big reason they've remained successful consitently...compared even to other good programs in the Pac-10.

I think the UIC players will have a lot of fun with this schedule. Our son always loved pitching down at Texas or Fullerton. Its just a lot of fun and it helps toughen you up for later.
