Yorktown started junior lefty Kevin Tomlinson, who had thrown only 6 2/3 innings all season, against District Player of the Year Tom Edwards. Yorktown was up 1-0 when Tomlinson came out after 4 1/3 excellent innings. Johnson relieved after complete game win on Friday. W-L put up 2 in the 5th to take the lead largely because Johnson slipped on the muddy mound when going to retrieve a shot he knocked down. Yorktown tied in top of the 6th. Johnson struck out the side in the bottom and Yorktown exploded for 5 in the top of the 7th as Edwards was removed too late for Austin Evans. Johnson closed it out in the 7th.

Probable pitching match ups and predictions for Friday's first round games?

Hayfield vs. Madison
Mt. Vernon vs. McLean
Stone Bridge vs. Washington-Lee
Fairfax vs. Yorktown

Oakton vs. Lake Braddock
Robinson vs. West Springfield
South County vs. Centreville
Woodson vs. Westfield

For McLean, I'd wager Sborz tosses game against Mt. Vernon in order to keep Buckley behind the plate. Could be Buckley on the mound, however. Unlikely to see Fitzgerald throw in that one.

1st Rd. predictions?

I think Vanderplas could give Yorktown a lot of trouble, that is a potential 4 over 1 seed. I would not be surprised to see Stone Bridge beat W&L. If the rumor about Ashooh is true, I give the edge to South County in that one.

Fairfax with Vanderplas is a tough deal. Fairfax makes few mistakes or miscues even with their youth and while their hitting is lacking, they will be difficult for whomever they play.

Yorktown should expect a serious game--no doubt in my mind.

There is a rumor circulating that Ashooh is out for the tournament after having contracted mononucleosis...

I had heard the rumor of his illness as well, but had heard it in relation to why he didn't throw against Westfield...Not sure if it is true and not sure if he'll miss any additional games...definitely will be tough for them if he's unavailable...sad for him and their team if they can't put their best guys out...

I don't know enough about the National teams to know how much of a shot that Fairfax and SB have, but both those teams played some tight games against some good competition, so we'll see...

Neither Woodson, South County, Robinson and Oakton are all solid teams too, so I'm not sure if any of the high seeds have easy games where they can save pitching for the second round...besides, throwing their #1 on Friday would likely let them come back on Wednesday if they get there...Again, don't know the National well enough to comment on Hayfield or Mt. Vernon...

I could definitely see at least one or two of the lower seeds winning the first game...maybe even three or four... Should be fun!

BTW - when / how do they announce the All Region team? It will be interesting to see who makes it...

WS gets 4 in the 6th to spoil a great effort by Freer. Wahl goes the distance for WS

Centreville 1
South County 0

Ashooh answers all doubts by throwing a no-hitter. Beal threw a great game for SC. Centreville squeezes home the only run in the 5th.

McLean beat Mt. Vernon 14-1. Josh Sborz started for McLean and pitched well. He also had a big night with the bat. Beiro and Buckley go deep for MHS.
W&L / Stone Bridge was 8-7 as reported...kinda like the Fairfax / Yorktown game in that it got called as W&L was warming for top 7 due to a down pour...SB had the momentum having scored a couple in the 6th and gone 3 up / 3 down in bottom 6...

Sure wish there was a rule to make all playoff games go to completion even if it meant another drive tomorrow...tough way to loose for both Yorktown and Stone Bridge...Not suggesting the outcome would have changed...just a tough way for the seniors to end their careers with the chance to win taken away by the weather...

NICE to see 3 man crews tonight...Plate ump had the CVSZ (continuously variable strike zone) for BOTH teams...a more consistent blue at the plate would have made for a better game...

Again, I was looking through a lens, so didn't see it, but heard a W&L player flipped the bird to the SB fans after he foul popped out between home and 1st...that doesn't belong...other than that, quality players and fans on both sides...a W&L parent even stopped me on the way out to compliment the team and fans and say that it was not the way to win or loose the game...

I couldn't agree more TTN. Games of this magnitude SHOULD be played to completion. I know W&L was the higher seed in that one, but that still is an upset in my mind given the history of the National district in regional play. In fact, according to the Post, they were 1-15 in the tournament over the past 4 years, the only win courtesy of Loudon Valley, no longer in the district. So big congrats to the kids at W&L. Congrats also to Woodson in another surprise over top seed Westfield.

I watched Centreville's Ryan Ashooh pitch for the first time last night and he appears to be the real deal, completely shutting down some pretty talented South County hitters. If you are looking ahead, Ashooh vs. Wahl is still a possible marquee matchup in one semi.

Thoughts on the 2nd round?

We will be seeing the #2 pitchers in these games with the exception of Mclean, who still has Fitzgerald in their pocket. I know very little about Madison as it seems they have been in Mclean's shadow all year. But that matchup with Centreville, along with Mclean vs. Woodson, appear to be the two most competitive of the quarterfinals. Can W&L and Fairfax give Lake Braddock and West Springfield a run for their money, or have they overachieved by getting to the 2nd round?

Your thoughts...

Absolutely, playoff games should be played out in their entirety. Too much power given to some random umpire crew to end the season for a team.

Not surprising as the whole state needs an overhaul. The huge disparity in the way All-District teams are chosen, the lack of stats available, no central score reporting...and so on and so on.

Yup...Lots of things to fix...just to be sure someone later doesn't misunderstand, there was absolutely no way that field was going to be playable last night and I'm not suggesting that the outcome would have been different...I'm just suggesting that if a team has the end of their season on the line, they should play a complete game even if they have to pick up the next day...otherwise, everyone is left wondering if the outcome would have been different...
It penalizes one team either way...I understand the time schedule, but there is no way to guarantee that Friday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday will all be rain free, so there is always a chance that a game would be postponed to or resumed on another day...if you want to ensure the best teams make it, then play it out to the end...both games may have ended the same way, but we'll never know...lousy way for the seniors to end their HS careers too for the losing team...

Oh well - best of luck to all of the teams moving forward...represent the NR well!!!

Madison's 8/9 hitters had 4 of the teams 7 hits.

Ashooh ended his HS career in relief in the 5th.

Which McGuire hit the HR...Ryan or Andy?

Ryan
Woodson over McLean 13-11 in 9 innings - another epic battle. Hough gets the win for Woodson (Wislocki started and came out when Woodson was winning - then Joe and John McGillicuddy had turns before Hough came in to close). Reilly hit three home runs (I think two were 2 runs and one was 3 runs) and Lluy and John McGillicuddy also homered in the game. Amazing - hats off to both teams.

3 balks and wild pitches moved runners for WS the whole game. Wahl cooled Fairfax's bats off. Fairfax had a hard time catching up to his fastball.

I think Vanderplas only pitched an inning...I believe they brought in a righty and then another lefty who ended up throwing the WP. Tough way to loose...

I was switching back and forth between this game and the Woodson game on Gameday...
