My old man carried a bat with him while scouting Marcus Jensen at Skyline H.S.....true story.

dee- The funny thing is that Skyline is in a very nice area in the Oakland hills. Lots of kids in the Oakland school district get inner-city transfers because of the academics and athletics. Lots of million dollar homes in the area.

how about in 1990? I should clarify, I was 13 and we may have caught him on the road a couple of times as well. He saw him play alot and all the games were not at home.

You might have me there (lol). I actually lived in that area up Redwood Road when I was a kid. Moved to the suburbs in 1969. Still a nice area. My guess is he was scouting him at Mack or Castlemont. In that case, a bat would not do alot of good.

There is alot of truth to the fact that the OAL is not covered like it used to be because scouts don't want to go into Oakland. Really a shame. There are some great kids who deserve some opportunities.

Glove Man- Downtown has really been upgraded. Some very nice areas. The airport area not so much. Visit Jack London Square on the water. Very nice.

Trivia- How did MC Hammer get his name and what is his real name. No googling!

Fav baseball player was hank Aaron. I forgot his real name, but i know he grew up in Oakland and was a bat boy for the A's as a kid.

Not only a batboy, but also an announcer on radio as a teen.

Go to Zackery's pizza at 5801 College ave in Berkeley (accross from safeway) or at 1853 Solano Ave in Albany for dinner. Looks like they opened one in San Ramon... Get the deep dish. The spinich deep dish is great. Parking can be tough at either location at night. I don't live anywhere near the place but I have it on my cell phone speed dial for P/u in case I happen to drive by at the right time.http://www.zacharys.com/

Cantina Resturant at 4239 Park Blvd in Oakland hills. Very good for lunch easy freeway access. Make sure you go up the hill when you take the freeway exit!!

Fentons Creamery at 4226 Piedmont Avenue. Not the best resturant around but its a local tradition. Stop by for a large ice cream desert in the evening.

Barney's Gourmet Burgers 4162 Piedmont Ave Oakland, near Fentons. Great place for lunch.

When you want to escape the city just cross the bridge and head over to Mill Valley. Stop in the Mill Valley Market and pick up a freshly made to order Deli sandwich of your favorite meats, cheeses and toppings on homemade bread and farm fresh produce. You can rent a mountain bike in town by the hour/day if you like or drive to Muir Woods and take a lovely hike through the giant red wood trees. You can make it as easy or adventerous as you want it to be. From there you can also drive to the Pelican Inn, an English style pub, where you can drink some ale, play some darts and head down the block to Stinson Beach.


EH, now for some reason I'm hungry too and I want to book a flight out of this infernal oven. We have had 58 days in a row and counting with heat index temps in excess of 100 ....I'm melting~~~~~~~ The "experts" say there is no end in sight for this heat wave yet, at least not in the next couple of weeks.

Gloveman, know you are a baseball guy, but if you have any desire to check out one of the top highschool football programs in the country, you might see if DeLaSalle out of San Ramon , Concord has a game ( or pre-season game ) during your visit. They are a great team to watch for a little local home town entertainment.

Glove Man - Like college football? Cal plays Tenn. in Berkeley at 5 p.m on Sept. 1. Both teams are ranked in top 20. The game is sold out, but you can get tickets on Craigslist, Ebay, Stubhub, etc.

Can't do better than dinner at Laline's in Berkeley - if you've got to have prime rib, try House of Prime Rib on Van Ness in SF.

Agree with College Parent - Zachary's Pizza is deluxe.

Don't be so hard on Oakland,everyone - Try Everett and Jones BBQ in Jack London Square for good Q!

shortstopmom- DeLaSalle is out of Concord (15-20 minutes north up Hwy 680). They Play Serra at home on Friday, September 7. That would be a great one.

I'll visit Oakland, I may even go to a Raiders game, I'll just have to wear black and silver.

For the record, you are in central California. I grew up among the redwoods of northern California and lived in the bay area for years. They are completely different worlds and neither one is anything like southern California. It might as well be three different states because it is surely three different states of mind. Well, I made my first trip tp one of the places listed here and after a half of a small Chicago Style Pizza and a few brews, I think I'm ready for bed. BTW, Zachary's is good, really good. And pretty close to Giordano's in Chicago. Just some minor differences.

Gotta work tomorrow, so won't be doing much until the weekend.

ncball thanks for mentioning that there is good and bad in every city. I am from Oakland (born and raised). I graduated from Skyline High School with Brian Johnson Catcher for The San Diego Padres and Gary Payton (NBA). Oakland and the bay area is beautiful. Yes Oakland is rough, but there are a lot of million dollar homes.

sportsmom- You are welcome. My family has alot of history in Oakland. My parents grew up in the John Brodie/Vada Pinson/Curt Flood era in Oakland for high school sports(my mother had class and was friends with Vada). My grandfather designed most of the original Jack London Square. I grew up off Redwood Road.

Glove Man- Go to The Hopyard in San Ramon for lunch or early dinner. Great food and micro beers (I'm an iced tea guy myself). It's off Bollinger and Market Place. Also, plenty of good steak places in the area. I like Haps in Pleasanton. Forbes Mill in Danville is also outstanding as well as Bighorn Grill in San Ramon. All within 10 minutes or so from San Ramon.

nc, I saw the Hopyard you're talking about today, and was tempted to stop by for a quick brew, but I opted to get a 2 month membership at Fitness19 instead!

It is inevitable though, I will stop by there before I leave, probably on more than one occasion!
