Obviously its real early, but I was wondering what the perspectives are for some of the top programs at this point.

-West Springfield got a nice win over Robinson.
-Chantilly is 3-0 including a win over Centreville with Ashooh pitching.

-Madison beat Marshall 7-0. I think this is a better win than most realize even though it's early.

-Lake Braddock has a lot of new starters but creamed TC in their opener and scored 17 runs. Has anyone seen them? They can always hit.

-Westfield beats Robinson in Concorde opener for both teams.

-McLean beats Stone Bridge in Liberty opener for both teams.

-South County beats Annandale handily and throws a no-hitter (I heard?)

I haven't had a chance to see any regular season games yet but am curious about how teams are looking. I'm going to try to make WS and LB this Tuesday. Should be a good game!

Concorde: it'll be a 3- or 4-horse race in this district between Centreville, Chantilly, Robinson and Westfield, with the last three seeming to be the strongest out of the box. Herndon will challenge as well; they're in much better shape all around than they have been in the last few years. Oakton has a young team, but you can't ever count them out, and Fairfax will surprise someone as they always do, but I think these two programs are still in rebuilding phase.

As for others, I've seen West Springfield and South County, but not Lake Braddock. West Springfield will be one of the strongest teams in the state this year, behind its fantastic pitching corps of Wahl, Kent and McMahon with a few others right behind them. South County has the hitting to do well, but doesn't have the arms that WS has (but then again, who does?). Lake Braddock will give West Springfield a run in the district and region as they always do.

It's gonna be fun in the Northern Region this year...

Seems like there will be more parity in the region this year.

I watched the WS vs. Robinson game. Wahl was pretty much unhittable for 5 innings. Robinson is a very young team and looked dreadful in the field. Kueter was only so/so and seemed to have control problems. WS should have won that game by a wider margin.

WS will be the team to beat in the Patriot District. LB and SC crushed TC and Annandale but obviously did not face WS quality pitching. True test will come Tuesday when the LB bats face WS pitching. What may be even more interesting (and perhaps more telling for the regionals) is whether WS bats can hit Lindemuth or Derner.

I'd like to hear about the McLean/Stone Bridge game. After watching McLean's young team in the regionals last year, I predicted they would be a contender this year. Sounds like they are off to a good start.
Robinson over Centreville, 10-9. Robinson spotted Centreville 7 runs in the first, but then chipped away the rest of the night as the seniors for Robinson stepped up. Senior Ryan Holston threw four innings and only gave up two unearned runs, and gave way to senior Michael Del Buono who threw three scoreless innings for the win. Del Buono (4-for-4) and his senior classmates Chris McCloud (1-for-3, 3 RBI) and Brandon Kuter (2-for-4) all went yard for Robinson, and senior Mike Kenah came up big with a 2-run walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th with two outs.
Any updates on this weeks games so far?

MV almost had another no hitter last night against Falls Church. 1 hit in the first 4, was leading 13-0 going into the 5th when FC exploded for 5 runs which included two monster bombs. It seemed as though MV pitch everyone in the game, 5 pitchers total. Final was 15-5.

Zack Quigley hit another moon shot last night and also pitched a scoreless inning.

Im really not sure about this because I havent seen any of them play, but it seems like maybe the bottom half Patriot teams are improved this year. LB only beat Annandale 8-5 last night, and just by looking at the score that suggests progress for Annandale. Yes, I know LB has a lot of new kids they are working in, but in years past LB has absolutely killed the lower half of the district.

West Potomac has a few wins early. How are these teams? Any better than they've been or still overmatched?
West Pot only lost to Chantilly 4-3 in the Spring Break tournament. I've seen Lee. They will have a difficult time this year. Don't think that TC will be able to compete against the better teams. This is a top heavy district this year. I'm sure West Springfield will be challenged when they play LB and the lefty pitches, but teams will be hard pressed to overcome the pitching WS has this year.
Robinson 5 - Mount Vernon 4 (in 8).

Robinson spots MV 2 in the first, comes back to take a 4-2 lead on a 2-run bomb by junior 1B Rutger Floyd, then MV ties it up with 2 in top of the fourth. Senior Michael Del Buono comes in to pitch for Robinson with 2 out in top of 6th, runners at 2nd and 3rd, and gets the out, then goes 2 more innings for the win with 5 Ks (including striking out the side in top of 8th) and no hits. Robinson wins in bottom of the 8th when senior SS Mike Kenah leads off with a smoking single to CF, takes 2nd on a sac bunt by junior PH Liam Redden, and then scores from 2nd on a wild pitch and error at 3B allowing him to score.

It was certainly a battle. If this was a tennis match MV would have had about 16 match points from the 6th inning on. Zach Quigley hit what looked like a game ending HR in three straight at bats. One hitting the top of the fence in left center. MV smoked the ball and Oakton OFs had amazing range. In the bottom of the 9th mv had 3 opps to win the game on a base hit and Oakton made game saving play after another. Double Plays, diving catches, this team looked solid in the field. SS looks like a serious stud and someone that will turn heads over the next two years! Kid has amazing range and a cannon for an arm!

Does anyone else have any updates?

I've had the opportunity to watch some Herndon baseball recently. Echoing some earlier observations from our crack staff of reporters, defensive lapses has done the team in on more than one occasion. To paraphrase a long time regular here, "ya get what ya get when ya give a team five outs an inning...... "
Spring Break update: South County wins 3 of 4 in Orlando National Baseball Classic and places 3rd out of 16 teams...Winning pitchers are: Miller, Townsend and Harasin. Digby leads the hitting attack with 7 hits and 7 rbi's. Fitzgerald and Fleming also had 5 hits a piece. South County will play 4 games this week, starting with TC Williams on Tuesday.
I did see a bunch of games over at McLean and Langley over sping break. Some thoughts:

-Oakton got a lot better last week. They were very impressive in wins over McLean and Langley. If they can have Francis throw anywhere near the way he did against McLean, they'll be tough in the Concorde the rest of the year. Henne looked very good on the mound.

-Chantilly hit the ball better than I expected overall. They hit a bunch of HRs over at McLean off of average pitching, but that's what good hitting teams should do. I liked the way Collela pitched against McLean. He got hit around a little bit and the umpire wasn't giving him anything, but he kept on coming and battled for six innings. I was impressed.

-Robinson has a lot of talent on their team, but couldn't beat Langley's #4 pitcher and their game with McLean wasn't nearly as close as the 10-7 final suggested. Against McLean, both of their top two pitchers got knocked around pretty good and their lineup didn't do much off Fitzgerald until he was worn out in the 7th inning. McLean must've had no pitching left at all, because there was no reason for him to throw the 7th.

-Langley has a very solid team. Zarella got it done without his best stuff against Chantilly and that's a good sign. As mentioned, they also got a great start out of White against Robinson to get that win. They will need other pitchers to step up in the second half of the Liberty season, so that's a good sign for them.

-McLean looked like world beaters against Robinson on the final day. But they were mediocre at best against Oakton and they made some ridiculous outs on the bases in their game with Chantilly. They looked like they were a little out of focus in their two losses, but with Fitzgerald on the mound they were terrific against Robinson. They need to be more consistent and they need other pitchers to step up behind Fitzgerald.

-Mount Vernon has a good team. Carpenter is a very good pitcher and would be in any district in the region. I was impressed with how tough they played. Their coach is doing a great job.

-Yorktown is also good. They are always solid and they played Langley really tough and had chances to win that game.

-W&L has a pretty good lineup but their pitching will probably prevent them from passing Yorktown or MV in the National.
Tuesday night looks like a great night for baseball! Matchups include; South County going up against BI, Mclean vs Woodson, Robinson vs Lake Braddock, Stone Bridge vs Langley, Chantilly vs Oakton, and Fairfax vs Westfield (I had to toss this one in!).

I also heard Woodson did extremely well in FL, does anyone know their results?

What are some thoughts? I need the high school package instead of the MLB package tomorrow night. Everyone is coming back rested so it should set up to be a great night for baseball!

Thats still great for Woodson! It sounds like WS enjoyed springbreak a little too much..... I wonder if WS played its B team down there. I know some programs use SB tournaments to get in players that wont play that much during the regular season, do you think this was the case with WS?

I know Edison went to South Carolina and didnt do to well. I think they got no hit by a SO from Ohio. Apparently this kid could throw the same pitches from 3 different arm angels.
Robinson defeats Lake Braddock, 4-2. Robinson pitchers Brandon Kuter, Austin Freer and Michael Del Buono combined to throw a three-hitter, and Robinson picks up a big non-district win against cross-town rival Lake Braddock. Key hits from Chris McCloud (2-run HR in the 1st) and Rutger Floyd (3-for-4 and the game-winning RBI) paced Robinson.

The Rams return to the field Friday night at home against Oakton to finish up the first half of their Concorde District schedule.
Mount Vernon beat Bishop Mcnamara 15-6 last night. BM exploded for a 6 runs in the first 3 innings that included two bombs. BM had a 6-3 lead after 3. MV battled back behind homeruns by Tre Cook and Logan Booker. MV also got 2 strong innings a piece from Mike Murdock and Wyatt Carpenter. Carpenter is currently in the midst of a 15 inning scoreless streak (Robinson and Oakton are included on this streak).

MV plays WL on Friday for second place of the National District.

All I can find is a HS top 25 and a preseason top 50. It would be great to see a national top 100 or top 50. If you cant no worries, just keep me updated! Menchville in Newport News is #3 on Baseball Americas top 25. Apparently they have a kid from the Virgin Islands that is throwing lights out.
