No outs. No Count
Runner R1 on 2nd and R2 on 1st.
B1 hits a line drive to F5 where the ball strikes F5 glove. However, F5 does not catch the ball where the ball bounces off his glove and into the air. F6 who is near by makes the catch off of F5's glove before the ball strikes the ground.
B1 is out.

Question:
Since the ball was not caught directly by F5 but caught by F6 in the air off of F5's glove, do runners R1 and R2 need to tag up before proceeding to the next base?
Where and/or what rule applies?

Similar to a question on the FED test this year.

Being deflected off F5 and not touching the ground or any other object such as a fence or dugout, the ball is still "in flight" and when caught and secured by F6 the batter is out. Runners do need to tag prior to advancing.

May I assume that you are a coach or fan?

Despite FED maintaining its ridiculous nomenclature in its books (R1 on third, R2 on first, etc..) The vast majority of umpires and clinicians have adopted the pro nomenclature wherein runners are known by their location: R1 is on frist, R2 is on second, and R3 is on third....always.

The batter is known simply as the "Batter" until he becomes a runner, at which time he is designated as the Batter/Runner (B/R).

It's far clearer and more precise than the FED system.

It's on the touch. It's also a very basic rule. You can be assured Jimmy knows it as well. I think you misunderstood his post.

I'm sorry I did not write my post clearer...still a bit tired after a DH.

The tag up is after the first touch of the ball, not the catch, just like in any flyball situation.

This rule prevents fielders from "juggling" the ball to keep runners at their bases.
