The bottom line is during a game you might see a kid swing five or six times. In a round of bp you can see his swing 30 40 or more times. You can throw him outside and see his approach and you can see his approach on the inside pitch as well. You can see power bat speed and his ability to hit the ball hard consistently or not. If I can see a kid hit in three or four games versus see him over a longer period of time in bp I take the bp session. If I can watch a kid over the course of an entire season Ill take that over bp. I disagree that you can not tell anything by watching bp. You can see if the kid has a sound swing and the ability to drive the ball to all fields. You can see pitch selection and power. Does it mean that a kid is an outstanding hitter if he looks good in bp. No. But from my experience the kids that can put on a show in bp most of the time are our best hitters. The vast majority of the time.
