Not sure what to do

My son's graduating in 2010. He plays first base, outfield, relief pitches, and is a pretty solid hitter. His fastball is hovering in the low 80s.
He ranked a 7 at a PG showcase. He is thinking about going JUCO and we've had good interest from some JUCOs and D III schools. He really needs a year of JUCO to get himself to where he's D1 material. Here's the question: He wants to go to a winter camp for a D1 school that's his first choice for a school. I am concerned that if he goes to their camp before he's looking like a D1 prospect that the school won't be interested a year from now.
What do you think? And do you go to the hitting camp or the pitching camp? Thanks for any insight.

OHMom, if I were you, I would send him to the hitting camp.

Honestly, with a fastball in the low 80's, it probably wouldn't behoove him to go to the pitching camp. Until he's throwing in at least the mid- to upper-80's, D1's will probably not be interested.

With a 7 rating, a D1 might be a stretch. But it would be good for him to go to the camp for several reasons. First, he can interact with the coaches without restriction on campus and both parties can get a good feel for each other. Second, if the coaches see potential in him and know he is interested in the school, they will follow him while he's at the JUCO. Lastly, if coaches show little to no interest while he's at the camp, it will be a helpful (albeit disappointing) sign that he needs to look elsewhere if he wants to play college ball.
