Have any of you ever done a drill where you put numbers or colors on the ball and have the player call out what number or color hit the bat after their swing? Is this effective?
We did this for a few days a couple of summers back. I liked it. The hitters seemed to have a possitive response to it as well. At best it increases concentration and coordination... At worst it breaks up the normal BP routine.
We use both. We have a bucket of tennis balls w/ numbers on them we use inside and baseballs in about 4 different colors we use outside. I really like both. Good (inexpensive) ways to work on vision training and focusing on the ball out of the pitcher's hand. We also will mix in balls with no numbers/colors that the players must take, to further increase concentration.
When doing soft toss drills I would toss a ball that looked like a 4 seam fastball and alternately a 2 seam fastball and had my Son's call out 2 or 4 seam. That seemed to work well at getting them to focus on the rotation of the ball.
We have done the number thing also, but primarily as an infielding drill.
