In a plate game I worked a few weeks ago a pitcher made a pick-off to first base. The throw was was high, so the 1st basemann needed to jump up quite a bit to catch the ball. The runner in the meantime dived to the base and was lying on his belly with his hand on the base. When landing the 1st basemen tagged the runner on his back, which caused the runner to lift his arm a bit, so he was not in contact with the base for a moment.
I did not regard the tag at the time as violent. The runner was declared out by my partner. Should obstruction be called in this case and the awarded second base?

Is there space in the rules to not call the out and let the runner stay at first base?

Not really.

If a "normal" tag causes a runner to lose contact with the base, the runner is out.

"Normal," in this case, means a tag that is not excessively violent or physical. A simple hard tag is a normal tag.

Correct. A runner who cannot maintiain possession of the bag when a normal tag is applied, whatever the reason - loss of balance, etc. - is called out.

Obviously, he wasn't "in touch" with the bag. He touched he bag. But if a normal tag makes him lose contact, he never possessed the bag.

What would you if he was standing and slipped off the bag?
