I saw some older posts mentioning Oxy, but I'm wondering if anyone has recent information or experience to share? I know it's a good academic school. Any insights?
you are right...great school and the program is heading in the right direction. field and locker room have been upgraded. conference is pretty decent and assistant coach that i talked to seemed like a good guy...great place to go to school
Oxy is an outstanding school academically. The campus is very pretty (its been used as a movie set in the past). The baseball facilities are very nice. The coaching staff is working hard to build a competitive program and appear to be very supportive and involved with their players. My son had a great deal of contact with them over the summer and fall prior to committing to USMA. I think it is an outstanding option for the high academic player.
Thanks for the replies. I have seen the campus once, and heard that Coach Hawkins has been working on improving the facilities. It looked pretty good - nothing fancy, but nice. Is it true that the program is rebuilding? Anyone know much about the coaching staff? As a D3, all the player - or coach - has is the others word. And I admit, that makes me a bit uneasy. If a player "commits" to the school (stops pursuing other options), I wonder if what was presented during recruiting will be realized. I have no reason to question the integrity of the coaches, just thinking aloud here.
bbdad As a DIII, they don't have anything to sign - but my son was told by hc that he was going to send a recommendation to admissions on my son's behalf. Also made statements about role on the team etc. that I'd rather not be specific about right now. I'd be happy to discuss more in a PM. Is your son looking at Oxy?
Coach Hawkins is a good guy. He is working hard to really rebuild that program. Academically you can not beat the education that your son will receive at Oxy.
I do not know anything about the assistant coaches, but I do know that coach Hawkins in my book is a solid guy.
Bump. Hawkins now an AC at UCSB in his first year, joining all new staff. AC Wetmore now HC. Oxy is expensive and appears that few tips or slots go to baseball. They also play FB in the SCIAC.
