chris finwood from auburn has been mentioned by some very good baseball folks. i'm sure that with the opening @ auburn he is in the mix for some consideration there. i was told that nick boothe has already interviewed for the job. odu should make a decision within the next week to 10+- days. hopefully the next coach will get the same hype and support as our recently selected wrestling coach ?
I have known Coach Boothe for several years now. And I agree it would be tough for him to leave VWC. But ODU would be a nice fit for both sides. Coach Harvell from CNU is a pretty good guy, but no where near the level of Coach Boothe, or even Guzzo. That would be a step backward in my mind for ODU. And it just wouldn't make sense to leave a program up and coming like W&M for a building process at ODU.
AS PREVIOUSLY NOTED JARRETT IS THE PROBLEM- ODU HAS A FULL TIME FUND RAISER( FRAIM) BUT TONY WAS FIRED FOR NOT RAISING MONEY- NO DOUBT FARR PULLED OUT TONY WAS TOLD BY PREVIOUS COACH( MCMAHON) JARRET WOULD NOT LET YOU WIN I SAW MY SONS AD ( D-1 BASEBALL) AT MORE -odu will never win with 28 player limit(including hurt and red shirts) jarret cares only about camp revenue( he gets a cut) and womens sports. i see wrestling is going to pay assistants look at odu and othetr cac teams assts( vcu has had same ones for years) the reason job not filled is the word is out on how the coach gets " micro managed" and how there is no committment to win. the people at odu games have been parents and friends of tony- i know the loyal odu guys( zontini, wright, price) will stick, but, if they really want to help long term, they will make a statement with $ and attendance- lastly the clinicians at clinic were there not for odu- but out of admiration and respect for tony( even after small stipends were pulled)
DO NOT DOUBT A COACH SAID NO THANKS AFTER MCMAHON AND GUZZO LEFT WORD ABOUT THE SITUATION THERE ( LACK OF SUPPORT AND MICRO MANAGEMENT) IS GETTING OUT COACHES ARE PROBABLY LOOKING AT OTHER JOBS FIRST- HENCE DELAY- NEW COACH IN FOR A REAL CHALLENGE, HOWEVER, MANY BELIEVE HE WILL GET WHAT GUZZO DID NOT( PAY FOR ASSTS, LESS NEUROSIS ON TITLE 9? ROSTER LIMITS AND MORE AUTONOMY-)AS JARRET WILL WANT TO PROVE HE WAS RIGHT- IF UP TO HIM , HE WOULD HIRE A FEMALE AND BE THE FIRST D-1 TO DO SO- SAME ISSUES WITH OTHER SPORTS -
redbird5,
i thought this mornings article on retiring senoir associate ad mikki baile summed up quite a few things down there on hampton blvd. ??
i'm sure that ms. baile has won much respect over the years, and very deserving of the ink. it really spelled out what has been happening @ odu for the last 30+- years. especially the trail blazing emphasis on title 9. hopefully, the next coach (if they ever get around to hiring one ???) will outlast this current administration !
driller,

Mikki is a good woman but you are correct. When the AD says baseball will be a regional (mid-Atlantic) force (and funded as such) while women's hockey and lax will be a national powerhouse (and funded as such), something is wrong. I am all for the development of women's athletics but to let The Bud get to its current state is horrible.

By the way, how will the new head coach (whenever he is hired) supposed to compete next year? What about the year after that? If Jarrett continues to drag his feet, he will set up the next coach for failure. Dr. Jarrett stinks for baseball. How about them Lady Monarchs, though?
Redbird:
If you think baseball is underfunded now, just look back to the 70's when we played at the old Larchmont Elementary School field. All dirt infield, chain-link 4 foot fence at 350' all around, wooden recreation-type bleachers. We road in station wagons and cars to many of our road games my first 2 years.

The Bud was unbelievable when it first opened, state of the art for college baseball. But times have changed and more money and administrative support is required for a top level program. While I don't expect ODU to support baseball to the level of FSU, S. Carolina, Texas, etc., I do believe that the priorities are out of whack.

All of you ODU contributors:: The next time Ed Fraim comes to you and solicits money for the baseball program, talk to him about what happens to that money. Make sure he understands that you are giving the money to baseball and do not want school support cut from baseball just because they are able to raise money from private contributors. I believe Ed supports the baseball program whole heartedly, but maybe he can take the message back to Jim Jarrett.
EagleOne,

I remember Larchmont. I also remember the "nice" powder blue uni's. I was given a pair of the Blue pants and the white pants when the pinstripes came in under Newman.

I don't think superfunding is necessary at ODU BUT, if you have a nice facility, at least keep it up. The locker rooms are embarrassing. Can't they spring for some carpet? Heck, give the baseball team Anders' throw away turf.
You got to ask yourself about the future of the program. I have read the postings and there are alot of folks still loyal to the ODU program. It would increase the popularity of the program to local talent if at least some level of interest was held by the administration. I remember a few years ago having our team there for the Regionals. I looked around at the facility and was really surprised at how outdated and limited it was. This past year we went to ECU for a camp, and my son asked is this a real D1 facility or special. He was comparing it to ODU, and there is no comparison. The athletes that can make the program competitive tend to choose the programs with a good facility. And right now ODU is a far cry from attracting those athletes. That is sad because the sport specific fundraising and the general athletic funds should be handled and distributed to support upgrading the program. I wonder if ODU gets the 11.7 scholarships allowed by D1 schools ? The administration should back the program at the same level the other sports are backed ! There is no way to convince me that Baseball is not as popular !!!!!
