All has to do with the purchase of land during the planning phase of a school district wanting to open a new school. If there is room they will put it on campus ~ if not they will aquire land as close as they can. Sometimes an after thought? Maybe. Takes
more than the area of a field ie; parking, clubhouse,
cages and don't forget about softball as well. Times have changed on what was acceptable. Take Berkner and North Garland as two examples. Both are at a minimum as far as space is concerned. One needs 6 football practice fields don't ya know. IMO
In the case of Marcus, the existing field land was needed to make room for the new football stadium. The new baseball field is just 3/4 miles away, where the new Freshmen campus will be built. It also has a new practice field for football. Anyway have you seen the new facility.....it's first class with great indoor hitting. I don't think that funneldrill minds traveling 3/4 mile to go there.
I'm sorry.. I just have to laugh at some of the things "required" for a high school baseball field. And I'm sure you'd laugh when you saw our baseball field at home.. top of the line backstop with the bricks and net and all, but how about the dugouts sitting 25 feet from the foul line? How about it being 365 to dead center with the wind blowing out all spring long? How about absolutely no room for ANYTHING extra?...

Who is responsible for student transportation to the off-campus field for the 'baseball period'? Lots of booster money investment gone. In particular the indoor batting & pitching cage.

At McKinney they either drive themselves or there is a small bus that takes baseball and track students with no ride to the off-campus fields. It is a little bit of a pain for freshman but I get the general impression at our school that people like the off-campus setup.

What is booster money for? Improved facilities for your kid and others come seems like money well spent to me.

Exactly Ken! Let me make this clear...LISD did not build Marcus a new baseball field just because. The only reason Marcus Baseball has a nice, new baseball facility, is so Marcus Football can have an on campus football stadium. In fact, I believe the original plans called for the football stadium to be off campus. Remember, the voters from all over LISD passed this bond...not just the voters from the Marcus attendance zone.

Full disclosure - my son is a Marcus graduate. Played baseball. Had a fine playing 'career' there. Our family's experience with Marcus has been postly positive.

FD introduced the politics into our discussion. May I engage? (Hijacking my own thread - sorry)

Just seems to me as a taxpayer that funds LISD, building another football stadium is a wasteful project. MHS has been playing football games in Lewisville forever. No reason this could not continue. Needing your own stadium is just hubris. In times such as these the new football stadium is an unnecessary expenditure. This project also illustrates how our education system (HS, colleges, everybody) overemphasizes the importance of athletics. I understand how athletics adds color to the education of our students, and in many cases provides the motivation to continue. I support the original intent of these programs. Unfortunately, I think the balance between education and sports has tilted too far towards athletic achievement over academic achievement. To support this opinion I offer up the existence of HS classes called 'football period', 'baseball period', 'basketball period'. All activities that used to be extracurricular activities.

Agree 100%

Follow the $$$. How much will a ticket be to a football game at the new stadium. How about a Coke or a hot dog? Add all those things up then tell me how long it will take them to pay off the construction note.

In regards to the emphasis on athletics vs. academics....who's to blame?

The parent?

The school board?

The state?

Either way you go, your correct. It's way out of hand. For that matter, all of it is. Summer ball programs, venues, tournaments, all of it.

In the end, you can't blame the monster you've been feeding.

Everything goes in cycles. It will all come around in the end I hope.

Heck, we're using wood bats now. There's hope still. Right PD?

McKinney Christian has been playing off campus at The Gabe in Craig Ranch. Nice place. However this week we just broke ground for Noah Field on campus. It's being built with funds people are giving in honor of Noah Pell a 4th grader at MCA who LOVED baseball almost as much as Jesus. He passed away in early January.

We should be able to practice there this year and might have a game or two there later on in the season. It's a great setting down below the school. The park will be very fan friendly except for parking, but that's coming! It's creating a lot of buzz around campus for baseball that's for sure. We'll even start up a junior high program this spring.
