I recently was hired at a 5A baseball program (3000) students. I have been a head coach at every level except 1A(smallest) leading up to this one. I have had a baseball class in a 4a, but with not nearly the same numbers. I really would like some insight into some succesful offseason ideas. I have a couple plans in mind, but really would like to know were your opinion on emphasis should go in the actual class period. Strength and speed development with encouragement to stay after school? Or should i develop some baseball skills and try and get the kids to lift and work speed agility on there own? I only have about 45-50 minutes a day that i can actually coach them legally. This has made me think i would most likely do the first of the two. Anyone with specific offseason schedules or programs i would really like to see or here about.

So this is a regular class during the day? Like a PE class?

Without knowing what Texas rules are in terms of working with your players I would say focus more on the agilities / power / speed development during class. Reason being you are going to have the preseason to work on the baseball skills. But let's face it they need to do the work on their own to really make it.

Hope this helps
In Texas we have "athletic periods." I too am a head coach at a 5A school in Texas and I get my baseball only kids year round for an hour and a half a day. 30 minutes is dedicated to a study hall, 5 min. to dress out, 5 min. to get dressed, 50 minutes for work out.

Kids can get 2 years of PE credit for being in any sport's athletic period. Coaches are full time, certified teachers and employees of the school district at Texas public schools. At 5A schools (I'll just speak for them since that is all I have coached at), every sport has an athletic period. I know most states do not do this, but I could not think of doing it any other way. I know we have it good here and there are some folks that would love to do away with our athletic periods. We have a very strong State Coaches Association so I would like to think we'll keep things the way they are for a while.
That's great you guys have such an opportunity and I see nothing wrong with it. People need to understand as long as you are fulfilling your obligations with the core classes there is nothing wrong with a PE class that specializes in your sport.

I still say focus on the agilities stuff in the offseason. You can't create an athlete but you can make the skills of athletes much better. If they are good athletes then picking up baseball skills should be easier in the preseason.
