As if we that have respect for kickball athletes, but utter disdain for their sport, needed another reason, do I understand that officially, the score of the World Cup was 1-1? (yes I know that on something called "penalty kicks", apparently like shooting best of five free throws, the "winner" was determined.)

Some things need no expounding.

I will continue to leave the sport to the rest of the world, and they can keep the metric system too!

You need to undertsand the game of "futbol"

I think TR is on to something. I work for the Univ of WI and for the last two weeks every morning on campus, wherevever you went, the games were on the tube with people watching. I tried my hardest to watch some of the Cup. I made it through half of a half and switched over to the World "Rock, Paper, Scissors" tournament on another ESPN channel. The TV went off and and the Honey-Do list came out. That's frustration .

The sokker athlete is in tremendous running shape with cat-like foot reactions. It is probably the only sport where an athlete has to use one set of extremities (legs) to perform the two major sport functions. But what impressed me most was how disaplined they play. 90+ min of play on a large field with very few mental breakdowns.

I can't wait for the Cup to play again in 4 years so I can see another game Wink. Derby tonight.

It would make you all more well rounded sports fans

I guess I haven't posted any pics of myself here on the HSBBW, but those that know me can attest to my well roundedness...I think Sonic burgers and their delicious coconut cream pie shakes have contributed much more to my full size spare than the game of futbol.

Can you actually believe that penalty call for an illegal player on the Scissors team? Evidently any two-bladed cutting instruments using a centered fulcrum and cutting surface of over 3.5” are considered ‘shears’. Can’t believe they called that so late in the tournament. I’d never have known had not Tim Kurkjian done a background piece on it during the rain delay. Not for nothing, but the way the Paper team carries on and on, shriveling up on the ground at the least little drop of rain is the height of wimpiness. Kurkjian said they get a lot of rain calls that way, despite Rock’s protestations. Those ESPN guys don’t miss a thing.

Unbelievable.

Determining the World Cup winner on penalty kicks seems odd.

First - what was the penalty? Why call them penalty kicks?

Second, out of ten kicks, the goalies got their hands on a grand total of zero balls. In 7 or 8 out of ten kicks the goalies dove the wrong way. This is somewhat akin to game ending when the shortstop dives toward third on a ground ball up the middle.

The Cup was decided on one guy who couldn't kick the ball into a wide open net when the goalie dove the wrong way. Pretty dramatic.

If they have to end a weeks long tournament in this fashion, at least back the ball up five or ten feet to give the goalie some shot at defending the goal.

I know I am an ugly American, but the World Cup bored me to tears. The only part I really watched was the penalty kicks, which pretty much confirmed to me that I made the right decision to not get wrapped up in it.
Determining the World Cup winner on penalty kicks seems odd. It is as it's only the 2nd time in Cup history.

Not quite the same bearing in mind the goalie is trying to defend a goal area 24' wide by 8' high on a PK shot moving at about 80 mph from only 36 feet away! Thus a goalies only hope is pretty much
anicipation and some luck Big Grin
Rob, was just pointing out how helpless the goalies really are on PK's...but do agree with moving the PK spot back further to at least give the goalie some reaction time...Actually there a few rules that I would like to see modified that IMO would open the game somewhat and generate even more interest, particularily here in the states. For starters the offsides rule which currently states there must be 2 defenders between the goalie and a passed ball. If you recall Italy scored a beautiful goal on a passed ball header only to have it called back for offsides...I would also limit the amount of defenders that can enter the goal area which clogs the box as well has not allowing defenders to stand on the goal line during corner kicks.
There is a reason players go so nuts when they score in s****r and act as if they cured some disease...

1-1 tie decided by "penalty kicks" Roll Eyes
so you play one "game" and then decide it by way of a different "game"

It is an over dramatized game of keep away highlighted by horrible sportsmanship, cheating, whining and crying and the ever popular off side rule which serves to make certain scores (and therefore games) can be controlled.

Don't forget that Italy not only won, the country's s****r federation is under indictment for rampant game fixing.
VIVA ITALIA! What racist comments could an italian say to a frenchmen, did he call him a communist? And!
Zidanmunist is another example of an overpaid low class athlete that sets a bad example. Then to top it off, the ding-alings at Fifa give him the Gold Ball award. He not only lost, but he betrayed his team and country with that bone headed move, and that shows Fifa's favortism. As it was, the ref was questionable on many calls in favor of the socialists (french), our friend, ally and don't forget, they would just be part of the German team if it weren't for us.
I watched the final game.

IMO - It sucked as bad as all the rest of them.
A boring mess.

Flopping drama queens. An embarassment to watch.

And then a head butter - done in a totally cheap shot manner. LOL

Zhidane - or whatever the name is - wouldnt need a yellow card to leave the field here. All he would need is a yellow stretcher to carry him off to the yellow hospital.

LOL
I guess I should have included gender in the list as well. My bad. So you're saying sportMANship has no place in sports? Why do we "waste" so much time emphasizing it to our kids in baseball? Why can't you just be the bigger MAN about this and say that no matter what the sports players (men and women) should respect each other? I'm not trying to defend Zidane, I'm just trying to point out that the Italian player is just as bad.
This is a sporting event - not a session with Dr.Phil.

No matter what anyone says to you - it will never justify a physical reaction like the one we witnessed from that gutless punk Zhidane.

Sportmanship is nice - but if you ever head butted one of my teammates - in any sport - I would do everthing in my power to knock you out.
Or die trying.

Zhidane needed to be put down like the sick dog that he is. IMO.

GET RID OF THE GOALIE! Brazil had 54 shots on goal in 7 games-with no goalie they may have scored just under 8 goals a game(remember they still have to kick the ball past the other defenders). If I were KING I'd widen
the goal by 10 feet and get rid of the offside rule and let noone touch the ball with their hands! Isn't it called FUTBALL?

Don't care what the purists think-it's boring(to me) to watch one guy pick up the ball and boot it 75 yards
down the field just to have his counterpart pick it up and kick it back. Kind of like watching your sons play
long toss for 90 straight minutes with the rest of the team practicing flopping in the middle. Big Grin

The only way Americans are really going to get interested in the game is if the scoring picks up.
