Two things you/he should be doing.

1. Get him to the gym and really hit it hard getting bigger and stronger. The single biggest differentiator  from HS to College is size and speed. Close that gap as much as you can now. If he is a position player he should be hitting every day, if a pitcher do a weighted ball program.

2. Do an honest assessment on his ability and work his list of prospects, look at schools size, location, majors, ect. Look at rosters and see where kids are from, majors, as well as roster turnover, Go visit some schools to help him understand what type of school fits him. There is nothing wrong with contacting the recruiting coordinator and let them know that you will be coming and see if anyone can meet you. We did a Christmas break mini vacation and  visited 6 schools, some coaches met us and others did not. Make sure his academics are in order, he should have an SAT score by now, can he improve it in any way? His list should be populated by now with the recruiting coordinator and head coach. No need to contact them now unless you have not had any contact with the program, and if not send a short email with a profile and a link to any videos you might have online.

Make sure he has a good summer team lined up for next summer and have his plans laid out, now is the time for summer planning.

Once the HS season starts and gets underway you can send short update on how he is doing. Prob midway through his HS season he should have his summer schedule done and then email the coaches on his list his accomplishments in HS and his summer schedule.

Forgot one key point, open an email account just for recruiting, it is his account and he should do all of the communicating, you help him with the list and proof all of his emails.

The key to this period of time is preparation for the big summer push next year.

Good luck
