Once a Knight now an Aggie

Without a doubt, that is a great hire!

Certainly not what "Dollar Bill" Byrne had been promising, though...

Rob Childress is a good friend. We have worked very closely with him and the staff at Nebraska for many years.

I can say in all honesty, Rob is one of the finest and hardest working coaches in America. Texas A&M will be a national power once again.

With the exception of this season, I thought Johnson had been doing pretty good...

Superegionals last year, regionals the year before (if I remember correctly), etc.

If one bad season is enough to get you axed, you may want to tell Rob to keep his resume current.

I agree, Johnson and the A&M staff were excellent and did a great job. All will land on their feet.

Also, I'm sure Childress knows what he's stepping into. I just think he'll handle it well.

The older I get, the more I start to think... The most important ingredient to success might be LUCK!

Ken (Peanut)..Even though Coach Childress and I had our moments, I hope he does well at A&M...He is a Knight, so I have no choice but to root for him...I wasnt good enough to pitch for him, but I was good enough to sign with Boston?????

Not very good reviews from Aggie baseball camp. Coach Childress never came out of his office and gave camp directors his bio to pass out to all the high school coaches and ALUMNI that were there helping.

Me, I have met him before and had a positive first impression. I still give him the benefit of the doubt, but lots of coaches and BASEBALL ALUMNI were really turned off.

I think people have a misconception about general "access" to the head coaches of the BIG programs -- quite unlike the JUCO's or DI-DII schools. Access can be quite limited.

My son's prospective coach (Big 12 school) told him that he may never see him pitch until the pitching coach decides if he likes him. I know it's different for walk-on players, but I get the impression that players at that level do not have a close personal relationship with the head guy.

To a large extent, the assistants run the programs -- the camps, the recruiting, the fall activity, the workouts, etc. That's not an indictment, just a fact. And that's fine...hopefully, a recruit has a healthy respect for his position coach and/or the assistant coaches before making a decision on a school.

All this stuff really adds to the intrigue, eh?

Maybe when you win 5 National Championships in one decade you can "big time" people. Until you at least win a game as a head coach, I would do alot of meetin' and greetin'.

Even then the "best baseball coach in America" was always around when you needed him, or he needed to see a kid.
