We had a tough district game this eveing, one that I felt we should have been able to win. After a few misplayed balls in the outfield and 7 run first inning with my ace on the mound I was not happy, what a terrible night.

Then the opposing team took the field and my perspective completely changed. We were facing the Haywood HS Tomcats and 2018 RHP #55 Landon Wilson was on the mound. What’s so special about Wilson, he was hit by a car 10/26/17 and lost his left arm and 6 mos later he refused to miss his senior year as a starting hurler for Haywood.

He pitched 4 innings, 3H and 8 K’s. He probably only gave up the shut out because it they had 16-0 lead in the 3rd and they subbed out the lineup allowing our batters to earn a few hits in the 4th inning and score a couple of runs finishing 16-2.

Obviously no one wants to lose, and I’m sure not saying I wanted to lose or am okay to lose but for a young man to overcome that trial and battle to a point to make it back to a starting role 6 mos after losing a limb...come on, it tough to be upset losing to him, especially when he pitched such a great game.

I contacted the Memphis Prep Sport columnist and he’ll be getting a story in the Commercial Appeal soon.

Wow, that's a very special young man.  Props to you + your character coach.  Thanks for sharing ~

I was joking with the opposing coach and told him it was difficult not to bunt every at bat and he said he faced someone earlier this year that did that after they struggled to hit him. This was a District game for me but not worth doing that to a kid that was overcoming enough obstacles making it back to the mound in such short time. Could I have made it a closer game, probably so but is that in good spirit of play and of the game, personally, I don’t think so. I did tell him that if it was a bunting situation I would bunt and he said he wouldn’t expect anything less and he respected that.

This is another example of the unwritten rules of Baseball. People complain about them but I like them. It helps show your true character.

I remember when a few mlb teams thought this was the way to go against Jim Abbott but soon learned...no.
