Some players like to open up because they feel they see the ball better and others need to open up because their flexibility doesn't allow them to get both eyes on the pitcher with a traditional stance.

The more muscular/thicker bodied you are, the more you may need to play with the idea. The thinner/more flexible you are, the less it becomes an issue. The reason it helps is because it allows you to use binocular vision (seeing with both eyes) rather than having your trail eye gaze across the bridge of your nose. As the ball gets closer to you and you close up, the nose is no longer an issue due to the location of the ball.
