This past autumn, a graduate of my high school was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Desmo Plastic Small Round Cell Tumor. In an attempt to organization an effort to help the family and the efforts to help his recovery, there have been two blood drives set up in the community. One is in June in a neighboring town and the other is tomorrow held at my high school.

Here is my issue: the young man, who graduated last year, was on the baseball team with me for two years and has been a friend of mine since I was 12 years old. I feel like donating blood in an effort to help the cause would be very beneficial to him, his family and myself. However, I have a baseball game after school tomorrow. Being that I just turned 18, I have never given blood before and therefore I don't know how my body will react to losing a pint of blood like that. I feel like it could be detrimental to both my health and the team to give blood and then attempt to go play a baseball game a few hours later.

Any opinions about this would be helpful. I want to do something to help the cause, but I want it to be safe and beneficial to everyone. Thanks.

Congratulations on being an awesome friend to your buddy. Having that kind of attitude of willing to help out others will take you places in life.

Giving blood affects people differently - some donate and get dizzy, weak, sick etc... while others donate and never phases them.

I happen to be a don't phase person but I am also a pretty big boy and always have been. I think that might be why it helps me not be affected.

My advice is to talk to your coach first a day or two before the donation. I would never tell a player of mine "no don't do this because you got a game" if they asked me. I think I would be very hypocritical to tell guys to do the right thing and then hold it against them when they want to help someone live a better life while living with cancer.

This gives your coach a few days to figure out a way to be ready to replace you in case you can't go.

I don't see it being a big deal.
