On a HSV team, of the 4 fundamental skills, hitting, pitching, fielding, and base running, which do you typically find get into “game shape” first to last?

It sure seems to me that the last is always hitting, followed by pitching, followed by defense, with running the bases being the 1st to come around.

1) Hitting - Many kids hit all winter. Hitters don't need the rest pitchers need.

2) Pitching - Their arms are usually in shape from getting ready for the season. From not facing hitters command is off.

3) Fielding - Only real serious players work on fielding during the winter.

4) Base running - No one base runs during the winter unless it's a college prospect trying to increase his speed.
Many years ago during the Area Code tryout, a parent [medical doctor]
from Ohio related on the phone that he had arranged with the HS coach a "pitch" count for his son. 75 pitches each game.
The parents of other players would count down verbally during the game.

My answer was one of applauding [verbally]and I told the father, if I was the coach. I would pitch his son the final 5 innings. I would drill my infielders to "make the double play"and not be "back hand"
infield "showcase" players.

My infield/outfield drills would be with a SSK fungo bat for one hour each day during live BP with extra pitchers or coaches or former players throwing.

Each batter, after hitting the last pitch splints to 1b. Then is bunted to 2b. Then the next hitter hits to the "right side" to advance the runner to 3B.Then the next hitter is instructed to hit a fly ball deep to score the runner [situational] hitting.

Ask me about the [Oakland A's OF] on Sat at SRJC at the alumni game.

There are 11 ways to score from 3b w/less than 2 outs.
Practice should always be focus on this goal.

"high tee" drill. do you use this?
