alright i am very confused. I experienced a very awkward play a few weeks ago and i would like someone to clear it up. situation is runners on first and second. batter hits a blooper which is caught by the shortstop in short left. the runner on second was on his way back to second and the shortstop tried to throw him out but he overthrew the second basemen and the ball rolled out of play. meanwhile, the runner, who had seen the ball thrown away, forgot to tag up and went straight to third. the ump sent him back to second b/c he had not tagged up yet. i thought he should have gotten third. please help me out.

You and the umpire were both wrong. The award is TWO bases from the last base legally touched at the time of the throw (TOT). Runner from 2B gets home, runner from 1B gets 3B. Then wait for the defense to make an appeal.
Thats a weird one and Id have to say a hard one. My opinion is, not based on any rule but ill look into it. IMO the runner that didnt tag up was in jeopardy of being called out but can only be if the play is made. Once the ball was in play and airmailed that negated the requirment to tag because a play was atempted on the out at second but was blown. A thrwon ball is in play.
