Outfield fakes

I have noticed this one more and more from my sons JUCO league and I saw it at a HS playoff game last week. There is a tag play and the outfielder fakes a catch to get the runner to take off but catches it a second later. The runner has to go back to tag and can't score on the play. Is it just a smart play or is it illegal?

Part of the game. I happened to see this one in person the other day. Got to love Ichiro!

It was awesome. (of course I only feel that way because the Giants went on to win the game)

fake tag in NFHS baseball however is not.....
