An observation over the years...

Coaches who perpetually argue with umpires over balls/strikes and close plays end up hurting their teams.

No, I'm not talking about 'umpire retribution,' but about re-directing the emphasis of the players away from their job and onto the umpiring. Somehow it seems to give them an excuse, to give them an idea that the umpire's calls are affecting the game more than their play.

I'm not talking about arguing the one controversial call every once in a while. I'm talking about the consistent whining you see from some coaches.

I've seen this from youth baseball to college and beyond. Time and time again, teams lose their focus...quit (effectively) because the coach says, 'We're getting hosed fellas!'

Thoughts?

I agree with you 1000%. I have found myself guilty many times over the years whining about the umpire throughout the game then being upset when my players try to blame the umpire for their losing the game.

Which is why I'm against instant replay in baseball. To err is human. Umpires make mistakes just like players and managers do. And the SS doesn't get a replay on a booted ground ball.

Play on. It all averages out in the end.
I agree, I saw that this weekend, a college which is suppose to finish close to the bottom of the conference was playing the #1 ranked team in the country.

The opposing coach was in the umpires' ear all four games, I could not imagine what he had to complain about so much. Was he complaing to the blue about his hitters swinging and not hitting the ball or making throwing errors?

Let the team prove it on the field, if they have the occasional disputed call or ruling, I say go for it, but really all four games?

There is one particular college basketball coach that I simply cannot stand. Don't like the guy at all. From the opening tip, he is constantly berating the referees. Some people think he's 'the greatest coach in the world'. I don't. I can't get past the way he treats officials, every game- whether it's for the national championship or vs. one of patsies they schedule to blow out for rankings. I won't name him (because I can't spell his name).

If you have been officiating for a league for an appreciable time, you know these coaches....its a little like the "boy who cried wolf"....they are well known in both the coaching and officiating communities....

They do not do their teams any good....oftentimes teams can take on the personality of the coach..often for the good and sometimes for the bad...

I am an umpire with a very low ejection rate........yet I ejected the same coach 3 times.....
