There is not enough
There is Perfect
There is too much

For lack of a better explanation Perfection would create the most bat speed that is under total control. Too much means the hitter loses control, which can create all kinds of problems with balance, tightness, vision, timing, consistent contact, etc. The bat speed does not necessarily increase with the additional effort.

Seeing that perfection is very hard to find, many believe somewhere below your best swing is a good option. It's once a hitter passes that point of perfection, even a little, he is over-swinging.

Probably the best discription of the perfect swing would be to "attack under control".
Great thread (and advice).

In my opinion,

This is why the hamstrings and hips can not be stressed enough with youth hitters. These are the strongest and most powerful muscles in the body and when stretched, can be twisted to unleash incredible body speed and power. This is what enables professional hitters (and golfers) to hit the ball farther than Pro Wrestlers (and offensive lineman) with what appears to be minimal effort.

I give a lot of hitting lessons to kids and if I tell one to swing as hard as he can, 99 out of 100 times he will by-pass the hamstrings and hips and do so relying mostly on his hands, arms and shoulders (which will affect his head/vision). Teach him the right way and he will rely on twisting the stretched hamstrings and hips, then back, shoulders, arms, wrists and hands (in that order).

That’s why I have never liked the no-stride unless a kid gets his feet double shoulder width in his stance. Otherwise (at least with the majority of the students I see), they never get their hamstrings activated enough.
