We are looking to install a PA system at our high school ballfield. We have one set of bleachers behind home that seats about 250 people and room for lawn chairs between the stands and the dugouts - so we don't have a large area to cover. We're not looking for anything fancy.

For less than $500 we can get a 100 watt mixer/amplifer, 2 to 4 5"x8" outdoor horn speakers, a microphone, and a CD player. Or you can spend several thousand dollars for something like a Technomad system.

Any advice on how much "oomph" you need to cover this much area? Has anyone tried to construct a low cost system and could comment on the results? Any advice on placement of speakers - how many facing the stands and how many facing the field?

Thanks,

I would say try a local pawn shop first. You may be able to find a good deal there. I ended up at Radio Shack for a basic 4 channel mixing board. I ran an older stereo amplifier thru that and had my cd player and speakers attached to the amp. Having the amplifier allowed me to connect 2 cd players and a cassette player to it. The mic went thru the mixing board which had a small built in amplifier.
As far as speakers go, the horn type work okay but if you can get a deal on P.A. style, go with them. It will allow you to use them for other things if you need to and they do sound much better. We all know that it's not how good you sound making general announcements but how good Britney sounds singing "Toxic"!!
I have install 3-4 systems over the past 20 years and used a system from Radio Shack. They work well. Be sure to the correct size of wire and make good connections and follow all directions. You will do well... pull_hair

Just make sure it's more than loud enough to irritate the living hell out of everyone at the game. It seems that's a requirement for all the teams here in Fla.

Also, stock up on plenty of rap. Make it as nauseatingly offensive as possible. My Son plays @ a 1A school so we get the added bonus of listening to the "artists" who rap "for the Lord" be sure you buy a lot of those, they're wonderful. Also Spanish rap is just exquisite...especially for a mostly Anglo crowd.
