Not at all pointed towards you and my reply was not as a result of your post. Campus life has an entity of it's own and the general public does not recognize that. I've lived in both of those worlds for 27 years. Computer theft, identity fraud, fake ids, illegal downloads, threating e-mail, plagiarism, and other offenses that main stream society might consider misdemeanors, are grounds for expulsion on campus. We have gone for years with athletes living above the rules. Students and academia are tired of it and with the spiraling cost of college education the student/athlete will be pushed even further into the spotlight.
Just like the steroid issue where a few "bad apples" are giving all the apples a bad name, the "special case" athlete also has a rebound affect on college athletes in general.
