Passed ball hurt ERA?

passed balls do go against a catchers stats but even though it is an error, the run is earned. This is a slightly unique situation.

According to MLB rules, passed balls are not counted as errors but are a separate category.

Here is the MLB rule for earned runs on passed balls: [B](d) No run shall be earned when the scoring runner's advance has been aided by an error, a passed ball or defensive interference or obstruction, if in the official scorer’s judgment the run would not have scored without the aid of such misplay

It really depends of what happened the rest of the inning. If the next three guys get struck out, the run is not earned. If the next two guys get singles, the run would be earned. Since the runner got on by a walk and would have scored if the inning played out where he would have scored from 1st or 2nd anyway, then the run is earned. Hope that makes sense to you.

Play out the rest of the inning as if the runner was still on second. If he would have scored, it's earned, if not, unearned.

Replay the whole inning as if the passed ball or any other errors hadn't happened. If a run that DID score, wouldn't have without the passed ball, it's unearned. If it would've scored (i.e. next guy hits HR), its earned.

I have always wondered about a pitcher's error. If a pitcher commits a fielding error or throws a WP, are the ensuing runs earned or unearned? I've guessed earned, but when you look at the rule that other's have cited, it doesn't distinguish between pitcher's errors or others.

A fielding error is just like any other error by any other fielder. A WP is a separate category, not considered an error, not scored as an error, and if a run scores on it, it would be considered earned.
