In Texas it's:

$35 Varsity, JV, Fr. plus $.35 per mile travel
$65 DH same teams
I've heard some areas of Texas charge meal money but not here.

There is a proposal in process to increase to a flat fee of $75 per game Varsity. I'm not sure about JV & FR. yet. There was a statement initially that JV & Fr. would not exceed $50 per game but I think that has been thrown out. The reasoning is that you have to travel the same distance to do a JV or FR. game and the same number of innings are worked so the pay should be the same. This also takes some politics out of assignments.

I'm curious in other areas what the rate is for JV and Freshman games and what qualifications you have to have to work a Varsity game. What criteria determines the assignments, Varsity vs. sub Varsity and are the assignments equitable in your opinion?
Pantherproud,
In my area, JV/Freshman is $35. Our assignor determines the assignments. State certification, attendence at the chapter meetings and paid dues are all that is required to be assigned to a game. Of course we are short on Umpires.

The assignor attempts to put the most qualified Umpires on the varsity assignments, but work schedules and availabilities are a major stumbling block. Many times the " Most available umpire" gets the assignment over the best umpire......And, human nature being what it is....sometimes the assignor rewards the "Most Available" guy with games the others might be better qualified for.....

So sometimes assignments are not as equitable as we would like...... For me, It is a non issue since my work schedule limits me to only one prime time varsity game a week, and leaves me open on evenings and saturdays where JV games are frequent and available.

Our JV's games are $45.00. All umps are required to work JV with no regard to experience. Varsity assignments are given on ability, experience and availability. The first two are determined by our BOD which I am a member as well as training officer. The assignor determines the actual schedule from closeout sheets. He tries to be as equitable as possible. Post season assignments go back to the board.
