This is off topic. But there has been a lot of off topic during the holidays. I'll post in two parts in case the second half is considered too political. As I read the article I felt it went from very interesting to very political. I'm excluding the last point since I think it might offend some even though many may believe it to be true. I found the article in a local weekly where we have a summer (freeze your tail off in the winter) house. It isn't authored. It's not in the editorial section.

*************************************************

How many zeroes in a billion?

The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" in a casual manner think about whether you want the politicians spending your tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend. But one advertising agency did a good job of putting it into perspective in one of it's releases.

a) A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
b) A billion minutes ago, Jesus was alive.
c) A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the stone age.
d) A billion days ago no one walked on two feet.
e) A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes at the rate our government is spending it.

...............

While the throught is still fresh in your mind let's look at New Orleans. Louisiana governor is asking Congress for 250 billion dollars to rebuild New Orleans. What does it mean given there are 484,674 residents?

a) Each resident could be given $516,528
b) If you're one of the 188,251 home owners, you could be given $1,329,787
c) A family of four could be given $2,066,012

Hello Washington! Are your calculators broken?

(the article goes on to list about fifty taxes)

We left British Rule to avoid so many taxes. None of these taxes existed 100 years ago. One hundred years ago the nation was prosperous. We had no national debt. We had the largest middle class in the world. What happened? Can you say politicians?

Perhaps in addition to rebuilding homes, they might want to repair/rebuild.....

The local roads.
The highway system
The levee system
The hospitals
The mom & pop stores
The malls
The electrical distribution system
The transmission substations
The doctor's offices
The large office buildings
The apartment buildings
The bridges
The restaurants
The elementary schools
The middle schools
The high schools
The colleges
The technical schools
The churches
The gas lines
The phone lines
The cable lines
The cemetaries
The historical buildings
The civic auditoriums
The movie theaters

Or we could just let New Orleans (and Gulfport) in a shambles
